UMSON, Fall 2012...is NO ONE applying?! :) :)

Am I in the wrong place?? I would think that there would be a lot of chatter with the deadline being tomorrow!

I am sure there are oodles applying. Now...where is everyone?!

I can assure you that UMD, (especially at Shady Grove where classes are smaller and faculty and students know each other quite well), has the same focus on getting their students through and not on "weeding out" students that some other schools are noted for. There are wonderful academic support systems, student organizations, tons of scholarships for Shady Grove students, and a lovely, safe campus. You should visit sometime. (I totally admit to bein pro-Shady Grove.)

As to underserved populations, I know that Montgomery county has a reputation as being all upper income folks but if you will do a little research on the demographics of the county, I think you would be really surprised at how very diverse it is. That is certainly reflected in our student body, which is actually more diverse than main campus. Our students go to clinicals all over the county, in DC, and even in Baltimore so there are plenty of opportunities to work with underserved populations. Hope you will think about us before you make your final decision but best of luck whatever that is!

I know it is a long wait to find out and I am aware of that MD is very thorough in their application review. I have been accepted into my backup school and I am afraid to lose my slot. Would it be wrong to put my deposit down to hold my place in that program and then decline at a later date if I am accepted into UMSON? I have no problem forfeiting my deposit.

Wow, SG sounds amazing! Too bad I am too far away! Is the SG campus that only campus that has "tons of scholarships"?? Are there not as many opportunities at Balto?

Thanks for the info Grey Lady. It is good to hear that the clinicals are diverse and there are underserved opportunities. I also currently live in one of the more diverse areas of Montgomery county and I like it and like that we have people from all over the world in this county.

SG is fortunate to have many local businesses in the area who are very generous in the support of this campus. There are scholarships available to all nursing students on either campus. Another good place to find grants is the Maryland Higher Education Commission. Nursing is a designated "workforce shortage" profession so there is money there as well.

I don't think you would be wrong to put your deposit down if you an afford to lose it and if you will attend that school if you don't get into UMD. So many are applying to nursing schools that there is surely someone who will take your slot and be delighted to get it.

Me too! My kids grew up with all kinds of people and we have the most and best ethnic restaurants in the state!

.....and I forgot to mention that we have plenty of free parking at SG, even in the six level garage.

You're making me jealous :) And, making me second guess my decision to apply at Balto, even though I live probably an hour from SG ;) ;)

I know! She is making me feel bad that I wasn't eligible to apply for this Fall :) I'm so mad at myself because if I had realized in August, I could've retaken Chem then.

Both the Shady Grove and Baltimore campuses have their unique advantages and disadvantages - like living in a small town vs. a big city. You should pick the place where you will feel most comfortable and/or where it is most convenient. In any case, the fabulous nursing education you will receive is the same - same books, same tests, same standards for clinicals and the same diploma. Go Maryland!

Hello everyone,

I was looking at the postings in this forum on and off. People seem to enjoy attending school in Baltimore. I'm glad I made a right choice. :)

Still waiting on responses from other programs.

Besides Washington DC, does anyone know if most of clinical are done in Baltimore, MD?
