Questions about Hopkins

Hi,

I will be a new grad in May 09 and am interested in applying to Hopkins. I do not currently live in Baltimore so I am hoping someone can help me distinguish between their 3 branches: Bayview Medical Center, Howard County and Hopkins Hospital.

I have looked at all of their website carefully, so I'm looking for information like: what are the neighborhoods like, what types of patients to they mostly see (suburban/urban setting), starting pay etc. Recommendations are always welcome too!

I moved to Baltimore last year to work at Hopkins. I started at the main campus and moved to JH Bayview. Bayview is a little smaller and In my opinion much nicer (as far as people go). The main campus can be a bit overwhelming at first but they have a good program for new grads "The SPRING program" is the name of it. Bayview also has a new grad program. If you can try to set up an interview at both and see which one you will fit in better at. They are only about 1.5 miles apart. Good Luck!!

If you want to work at Hopkins the main campus is in a rough neighborhood. Bayview is right off the highway and has easy access plus its close to Patterson Park which is probably the best place to live if you want to stay downtown. I live in the Pikesville/Baltimore City area (Northwest Balt Jewish district) I really like it there. In the city I also love the Roland Park area (arts/private college district).

Sometimes if you can't get ahold of RN recruiters it's sometimes just better to show up and try to make an interview appt that way. Was playing phone tag and not getting my emails answered by my RN recruiter at Sinai so I just showed up there an 1hr before an interview at Union Hosp and the Sinai recruiter interviewed me on the spot. She liked the fact I just showed up becasue it shows "I have ininative". (cant spell)

Just wanted to add that the bad neighborhood aspect of Hopkins hasn't been any big deal to me thus far. If you park at Orleans or McEldery (sp??) garages you can get into the hospital via skyways and buildings and not have to walk outside at all. No biggie. I know several nurses who park on the street but I'm a big chicken so I park in the garages. :) lol!

Hi, the last thing i heard about Hopkins is that they have a hiring freeze in many departments. New grads are having a hard time finding jobs (i know people graduating from hopkins this year). I agree with people on this board that you should contact people in departments and find out whos hiring. Good luck to you.

I grew up in Maryland. John Hopkins in Baltimore is a great hospital. It's located in a bad neighborhood so I wouldn't recommend living anywhere in the city. However Baltimore County west is great. Suburban area. Look for places in White Marsh, Windsor Mill, Towson, etc. Visit these places first. Also Anne Arundel County is good too and not far from the city.

Towson and White Marsh...won't that will end up being about an hour's dirve to work? Unless JH has other outpatient sites near those areas.

It depends on when you are going to work but White Marsh is only about 15 minutes away. BTW for someone that likes city living there are many nice city neighborhoods in Baltimore. Federal Hill, Locust Point, Fells Point, Canton and Hampden to name a few.
