NY Nursing Student Seeking Information about working at John Hopkins

Hello. I am a nursing student from NY who will be graduating Dec 2011. I have several questions regarding

John Hopkins (JH). I would like to work in NY as new grad for a year preferably in Pediatrics. I plan on moving to MD, so I would like to transfer to JH after my first year as an RN. I understand that I will need to get a licensure in Maryland in order to work there. I plan on paying the fee for the Maryland License. However, do I need to show proof of residency. Also, If I work in NY and I have 6mths experience can I apply to John Hopkins as a Per Diem Nurse? (meaning I would travel once a month to work on my weekends off, i want to do this so I can be familiar with the hospital as well as the location before I move) Unfortunately, I do not have any relatives nor friends in MD. I know this may sound a little strange. I am wondering if anyone has tried this before? I would really appreciate some advice. Thank you. :nurse:

I'm also a new grad who will be in the Hopkins Residency (not Peds, though, but Cardiac Critical Care) and will be coming from another state. Like Sweetie85 said, definitely talk with the recruiters; I've never come across individuals more friendly and willing to talk with you than these people. They will be able to tell you better than I about the experience requirement. However, in my situation, I had an externship in Critical Care that totaled about 300 hours, thus "qualifying" me as experienced. I was told by a recruiter that they consider you experienced (in Critical Care) after 120 hours in the field. So in that sense, the 6 months you work could count.

I've spoken at great length with many of them - I believe any of them would be more than willing to help. If they aren't able to answer your questions, they are usually quick to transfer you to another recruiter or someone who can.

The main pediatric nurse recruiters name is Cynthia Ranzolin. I think she might just be in charge of interviews/hiring. Just call nurse recruitment's main number and ask if you could speak to a nurse recruiter to talk to about pediatrics. I suggest you have a list of questions written out when you call because you don't want to forget anything you want to ask.

I have a job interview this Wednesday for a job in the Cardiac CCU. Can you give me a heads-up on what to expect in the interview? I'm not sure whether the interviewer focuses on psychosocial questions, or more unit-specific (procedures, meds, etc) type questions. Any insight you can provide will be much appreciated!

Also, how long after your interview did you hear back from Hopkins with a job offer?

First off, congrats on getting your interview! As people told me, that's a great accomplishment in itself. As for the interview, even in the specialities and sub-specialities, I'm getting the feeling that each manager has their own style of the interview. For example, I didn't get any NCLEX like questions, anything about meds, procedures, etc. Instead they really focused on me - on my philosophies, my qualities, and characteristics. My interview was very much a discussion/conversation rather than a rapid fire question round. The only direct questions I was asked was to describe a challenging situation and how I handled it, along with "What is the greatest thing you have to offer the unit?". I was also asked if I had a support system around the area. Oh and she asked the usual - "Why cardiac? Why cardiac critical care?" Also intertwined were more subtle questions about my philosophy of teamwork (interdisciplinary, rounds, communication, etc), beliefs on patient/family/nurse interaction, etc. It was a very relaxed environment (well, in as much as it could be with the mantra of "This is your dream job...this is your dream job..." going through my head). I interviewed on a Wednesday and my manager told me she wanted to have a decision within a week, two at max. However, I ended up hearing back like 48 hours later on that Friday morning they had offered me the position.

Thanks so much for your reply. I happened to read your post this morning on my iPhone just before going into my interview with HR. I think it really made a difference, as I had time to think about answers to the questions you were asked. I'm not sure which unit you're starting in, but my interview ended about 1:00pm, and I was called with a job offer late this afternoon to work in the Cardiac CCU, starting July 25th!!

btw don't you guys think its kinda cool that we can meet future coworkers on this site. I love it. I'll be in peds if you guys every come over there. Peds orientation starts Aug 1st so I won't be starting with you guys. Good luck to both of you on your floors.

Where in Peds are you working? One of my fellow students is starting in an adolescent Peds unit, and another is starting in the NICU, both on August 1.

I'm gonna be working on infant/toddler medsurg. I think they might of hired at least one new grad for each floor.
