new LPN grad & available jobs

Hi everyone,

I happily stumbled upon this site, and ever since been extremely happy with the friendly feedbacks. Im currently a Pharmacy Technician in Baltimore, MD making minimum wage and hating every minute of it. My true calling is in the healthcare field and for that reason, Im going to start with becoming an LPN in Spring 2012 and eventually an MD. I initially thought I should perhaps start with the CNA course but later found out that after my first semester in LPN school, one could get their CNA certificate. Being new in the healthcare field, I have a couple of questions that I hope anyone can answer.

1. Should I take an LPN course with the expectation of finding a job when I graduate in Dec 2012?

2. Should I expect to make at least $20/h with diff.,benefits and the works?.?.?.

Mind you, I leave in downtown Baltimore but don't mind travelling to the location of a good paying LPN job. Finally,

3. What are my prospects, and do you think Im on a rewarding and fulfilling career track?

I am an LPN in the Baltimore area. I have 27 years of experience and have worked in every venue from MD offices to Alzheimer's Units to Community Nursing to Private duty pediatrics.

There are a lot of opportunities out there in this area.

Harbor Hospital and GBMC do hire LPNs. Johns Hopkins hires them for the Community Physicians offices - they are all over the Baltimore area. There are several home health care companies that hire new grad LPN's and just about any LTC facility will give you a chance.

Salary... well that varies. Expect 15-18.00 an hour to start unless you are working nights or evenings or weekends. Some facilities pay higher rates but you have really look for them.

I am currently a pediatric nurse working with a home health care agency. I work nights with 1 child who has serious health issues and must be monitored 24/7. I make 20.00/hr and have been for about 10 years because the type of patients that I work with are model waiver ( medical assistance covers health care because they have capped out their private insurance) and all the state will pay is 20.00/hr--- I have found this pay is the same in every state I have looked into relocating to because the model waiver program is uniform across all states.

Again... I hope some of this helps. If you really feel a pull to the health care profession once you get your foot in the door you will be able to see what it is that you like best and then you can specialize in that area.

I just recently went to a job fair in Woodlawn last week. The market doesn't seem to be that great for new LPN's in the Baltimore-metro area..at least from the information that was given to me. Yes, a few hospitals in the area mentioned they hire LPN's, but they said it's rare..meaning to me they must only hire those with tons of experience. I did talk with a couple of facilities located in DC & they seem to be willing to hire new grads. If you can travel, I would go there..the job outlook seems better there. Good luck

I just read your post and I have graduated oct 2010 and it has been very very hard to find employment as a LPN. I see you named a few places that I looked into except john hopkins and all of them require 1yr experience so if you know of any agencies or other facilities that hire new grades or LPN with no experience can you please let me know cause it would be very helpful. I just found your post and Im glad you decided to go to school as I did. For me finding employment in Baltimore was very hard I saw a post from someone and she nailed it saying she went to a job fair in woodlawn and that places want experience nurses. yes it is true a lot of places do want experience, some people are blessed to not go through a lot to find employment coming out of school and some go through hell. But dont let nothing discourage you cause I didnt and I heard this before I went and I graduated passed my boards and just applied, applied and applied until something came through. I have been licensed since April & I've been on a few interviews. I think I will have an official job offer soon, pending references & background check. I have also been offered a job doing flu shots during the flu season. The pay isn't all that great (19/hr) but it is something to put on a resume.
