New grad RN positions

U.S.A. Maryland

Published

Hi all - long time lurker here. I wanted to see if anyone else is having a real difficult job landing that first RN job here in Maryland. I graduated from Montgomery College back in May and passed the NCLEX the first time in July. I speak 3 languages and thought that would help differentiate me a bit. I've applied to many openings, everything from clinics and nursing homes to all of the major hospitals from Frederick down to PG county. I had one interview so far and the majority of the hospital applications are still under the 'Applied' status. Very frustrating. I live very close to Shady Grove and did some of my clinicals there and it would be nice to start there just based on commuting times.

Has anyone heard back on applications from Shady Grove this summer? Any tips on getting in there/the job hunt in general?

I did not realize it would be this difficult to land that first job. I wish everyone else good luck!

I'm in the same boat as you. I haven't been chosen for an interview yet though. All of my applications say that they have been referred to a nursing recruiter and I will be contacted if selected for an interview. It is kind of frustrating waiting to hear something. How did your interview go though if you don't mind me asking?

Thanks for the response. The interview was with a small clinic. It was my first one so I don't think I was adequately prepared...it definitely could have gone better! It was very hard to read the doctor who was doing the interview, honestly he seemed most concerned with how far I lived from the clinic/had reservations that I would leave as soon as I found something closer.

I can definitely see that. I was only applying to positions on floors I was interested in working on; however, now I'm applying everywhere. It is def good practice if anything. So when you are selected to do an interview somewhere you are truly interested in working you will have it down. Best wishes in your continued search.

Hi, I feel the frustrations of finding a new job. I was once a new grad and it took me about 3 months to land a job in Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, MD and now been with them for 3 years. I got into their Nursing Residency Program which is designed for new grad RN in transition to becoming a Professional Nurse. The training is about 3 months with pay. They are still offering it I believe twice a year. And definitely they are offering it around this time.

Check out our website holycrosshealth.org then press careers

We definitely needs a lot of nurses especially the new hospital in Germantown will be opening this fall.

Let me know if u have questions that I can help with. Good luck!

Hi there! Yeah the system does not allowed to PM if u have not have at least 15 posts. That is to avoid spam.

Anyway, my Nursing Residency experience with Holy Cross have been great and mostly positive. I have a very knowledgeable and super nice preceptor who has been so helpful and patient.

The Residency Program at HCH has a combination of Orientation, Classes and Clinicals. The classes composed of Critical Care classes, BLS, ACLS, stroke, IV therapy class. There are also exams that u need to pass. As for the clinicals, the first month is mainly shadowing/getting to familiarized with the system, etc. then after your preceptor will assign 1 pt and u do all the clinical and charting. Of course your preceptor will still give guidance. Then the following weeks u will be handling two patients, and so on until u reached the maximum of 5 pts.

After 3 months u will do evaluation and u will be on your own after that...

hope this info helps... :)

Any new grad advice for landing a job? I have been applying for 4 months since I have graduated and 1 month since I have passed my NCLEX and haven't even had the opportunity to interview.
