Moving to Baltimore--quiet/safe areas to live?

U.S.A. Maryland

Hello all,

I'm relocating to Baltimore--just accepted a position with Johns Hopkins at their main campus.

Would love some suggestions as to quiet, safe, clean places to live/neighborhoods. Thanks for your help and suggestions, Stephanie

Hey guys this is my first post I've been afraid to type.. Silly me anyway I am looking at single family homes in Balt co. for 200,000 range and alot of stuff came up in DUNDALK and ESSEX... I was wondering if those areas were okay to live in (crime wise). I wanted to ask here because you all seemed to be very knowledgable about the area. PLEASE HELP ME..

Iused to live in Md, my ils are still there. Northern Anne Arundel CO might be good. We lived in Pasadena, which can be a bit redneck, lol, but it took us 15-20 min to get to downtown Baltimore and my neice and nephews school is supposed to be very very good.

Hi Stephanie,

A lot depends on what type of environment you uneed for Baltimore. If you have a family Perry Hall, White Marsh, & Towson are clean and quiet with a relatively short commute to Johns Hopkins depending on the shift you will be working. 95 starts to get congested around 6:30 if not earlier but as long as there are no accidents it moves through in about 15 -20 minutes. If you can deal with city living in a rowhome/townhome Canton and Fells Point are close to the campus but are newly renovated areas with lots of fun stuff to do. It's a relatively young area with lots of restaurants, bars/pubs, cafes, and stores. Housing in those areas can be a little pricey but it's a quick commute. Hope this helps

Don't forget the rats and junkies you see in the city. yes, Fells Point is great for the younger crowd interested in bars and partying but if you have children , it's not feasible. the taxes are extremly high. You have to pay so much for a small tight row house ( no less than 250K), to come sit on your stoop and big rats pass you by. It's disgusting! In order to get furniture and new appliances in your house you need to go through the window as the doors are so narrow. I would never live in baltimore city again. I grew up there and that was enough. Good Luck.

I know that I replied to this thread many months ago, but we just received news this week that we are officially moving to Baltimore in June. We are going to try for base housing first and if the waiting list is too long then we have narrowed down some apartments in Cockeysville, Ellicott City, and Columbia. I am interested in working at either Johns Hopkins or University of Maryland. Any more opinions on housing, hospitals, and schools for our kids would be greatly appreciated!!

All those areas are nice to live and I'd also consider White Marsh if you want to work at Hopkins or University of MD. To me that West side of the beltway is nasty traffic wise depending on what times you work. Hopefully someone will write in about schools but from what I understand you are on the right track because Howard County supposedly has the best if you are going to do public.

There are so many good hospitals in the area I'd look around. I've never been a big fan of nursing at Hopkins because they really don't pay that well, imo. It seems to me, again jmo, that the "prestige" of working for JHH is the payoff and frankly that doesn't pay my bills. Their name is all well and good and as a consumer I'm there but as for working there my ego isn't all that important to me. :)

Edited to add: WELCOME! This is a great place to live and work.

Thanks so much for the info!! I have heard that JHH pays less, but how much less. I went to UMMC web page and it looks like a beautiful hospital. The education side of it looks promising as well.

I saw that White Marsh is in Baltimore County. Does that area have good schools? Our report date is June 30th, so we have so much to do. Thanks again for taking the time to answer my questions!!

if your husband is going to be at ft. meade, check into the odenton area. it's really a nice area and very close to arundel mills - a huge shopping mall where the majority of the stores are outlets. they have a neiman marcus, saks, nordstroms, modell's and about 200 other stores. (as you can tell i love shopping).

i know this post was awhile ago, but my husband finally got official orders to fort meade this week. :yeah: someone from the base that my husband knows is renting out his home to us in odenton. we will be leaving la on june 23. were really excited to live up north again. still don't know where i want to work at. too many choices. deciding factors will be pay, convenience, and continuing education. take care!

Welcome! Odenton will be great because you wil have your pick of DC or Balto. I could be wrong but I bet you will be thrilled with the pay rate around here compared to LA.

I am a new grad and I am making 22$/hr and the cost of living in Louisiana is cheap compared to MD. I am hoping that MD will pay more:) I am in the process of applying for endorsement for MD. I should have the documents finished up this week. So far everything is going as planned. Just not sure where to apply for a job. I guess I will get my feel when I get up there. We are so excited to get back up north. The south is great, but I'm a northern person for sure. We will not miss the insanely hot summers here!!! Thanks for replying!!

Hello,

Not sure if you found housing or not. Check out www.interimhomes.net. :typing

Thanks!

Baltimore DC area pays more because it costs more. Same with NYC. Expect your electric bill to double over the next couple years (mine already went up 25%) thanks to bad MD legislation.

Carroll county has one of the best school districts in MD, excellent no line DMV and a free health clinic for no insurance/sliding scale if u have a job...and they're competent-better than my own doc.

Look up the crime, graduation, school statistics for CC-that's the main reason I moved here. The hospital is nice, too; they seem to be doing a better job than some without the city mess, no pollution, only half hour from Baltimore (I'd get there in 17 minutes depending on job site)

Out here you get a lot more land and feed the deer with less city mess and more safety and quiet (depending on how close to 140 u are)
