Hi everyone! I am new to this thread. All your info has been so great! I am applying to the program for fall 2012. I am concerned about being accepted as well. My grades overall are 3.3 and my current pre-req's for transfer are at 4.0. I expect to keep the 4.0 upon application to MSMC. I feel like I am in good shape there because of all your comments...But, I want to ask those in the program now, what kind of work experience did you apply with? I will have a year of volunteer work at Torrance Memorial by the time I apply. But, is this enough to get me in? What kinds of "previous experience in nursing" did you all have upon application?

Thanks in advance for your reply!

Yeah they had AA's, I think that's the biggest problem.

therein lies the dilemma. for them, i would just apply everywhere. it took my cousin over a year to find a job with only an AA.

hey nat,

you sound like a good candidate for this program. in our cohort, i think that we had some people that made it in that had no volunteer experience whatsoever, so im sure that you will have a good chance of getting accepted.

edit: the amount of experience varied in our cohort, but most of the people that made it in had some volunteer experience.

Hey Nat. Welcome! Before I applied, I met with an advisor to go over my transcripts because I was a little worried about my GPA (which wasn't so great from freshman/sophomore year) and she told me as far as GPA goes, they're mostly concerned with the prereq grades only and if you've had to repeat any of them. I think you sound pretty solid. As far as work experience, I worked at an outpatient pharmacy for 4 years and meanwhile I volunteered for 2 hospitals, both about 6 months each. The volunteering was my only experience nursing-related.

Thanks so much for sharing. I really am feeling a lot better about my prospects of being accepted.

Sugarlips, do you know if scholarships are still offered to MSMC students based on academic performance in the first trimester. I understand Kaiser was one of the hospitals that used to offer such scholarships through MSMC.

Also, do you have any friends that already graduated MSMC ACCBSN program... who have gotten job offers? Just wondering what it looks like out there. . .

As far as I know there are no scholarships being offered by the hospitals anymore. :(

Many of the 2011 May cohort did apply and get jobs, though some are still waiting. There is another round of applications that will happen in October for residency programs, so unfortunately the May and August cohorts will be competing against each other. You will find that when you are rotating around the different hospitals you will run into MANY Mount grads.

Are there any people on here that are applying to the August 2012 cohort, either first time applicants or reapplying?

Hi All,

For those of you who are currently at MSMC, can you tell me where the clinical locations are? And overall how you like MSMC?

I recently got accepted for the August 2011 cohort and I'm looking for places to live near the school. So I'm wondering how close/far the clinicals are to the school. Also, are the clinicals on weekends?

Thank you!

My room for rent will be available for you! My current roommate is hanging around after we graduate for our NCLEX prep class, but we can accommodate for the first couple of weeks. I'm literally 10 minutes from school, but on the westside where the 10 and 405 meet. You can get it furnished or not.

In regards to rotations, first semester you will be at UCLA, after that who knows. We've been everywhere. Where you live doesn't matter, as the staff will place you where they can. I've personally been to UCLA, Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, St. John's in Santa Monica, LAC+USC, VA West LA, and now heading to Little Company of Mary San Pedro and Torrance for community health. However, different groups get different placements, from Orange County to Oxnard for the last semester. Have a car that gets you from A to B.

Sorry, I didn't see your other questions. First semester you won't have weekends. After that it depends on what group you are placed. I went from Saturdays and Fridays to Saturday and Sundays. Last semester I had Saturdays and then was able to pick my hours.

MSMC what can I say. I paid my money. I show up when I'm told. I say no to everything. My advice: Be prepared to watch yourself every step of the way. Double check your paperwork with the business office, registrar and finances each semester. Keep copies of EVERYTHING. Be organized, there are lots of assignments that overlap. Do what is due immediately first. Don't take everything so seriously. Have an outlet. Be prepared for disorganization to progress as you progress through the program. Be prepared as August graduates that you will miss new grad programs and that you will need to work as a CNA for a few months prior to getting into a new grad program. You will do things you never thought you were capable of, and be amazed at yourself. You must do the thing you think you can not do. - E. Roosevelt

Good luck!

Thanks sugarlips for replying! I'm new to allnurses so I'm not sure how to work the website just yet. Is there a way you can private message me regarding the details of the room you have available?

Thanks for telling me all the info about the clinical sites. Did you take Bioethics at MSMC or Taylor University? Any advice on if I should take it before my cohort starts or should I just take it at the Mount?

If you can sign up for the Taylor class, TAKE THE TAYLOR CLASS! I did it in about 6 weeks. I ended up leaving work a week earlier than originally planned to get the last paper done, but it was worth it.

I still have my books, but not sure if you will the same ones or not. Let me know and I'll give you a good deal on them if they are the same.
