I have noticed that some other states are naming their hospitals and the starting salaries for each. Let's chime in Maryland!

I'll check for differentials later, but UMMC starts new grads at $24.15 per hour. This is current as of this month.

I'm researching nursing as a career and I'm wondering if you guys could also say how many hours/week you are working? I'm also assuming that you are new grads with a BSN?

1.5 yr exp. 36hrs/week. I usually work one OT day/month as well to cover my car payment. Could probably work 48 or 60 every week if I wanted to but I don't.

So these starting salary is for new grads in orientation right? How much do you guys make after your off orientation? What is the norm after 1 year, 5 years, etc... Assuming you get all the normal certification (ACLS, PALS, etc). I guess what I'm asking where and when do you plateau?

How can one prevent this from happening? I know getting a masters degree is one answer anything else?

Most hospitals in Maryland do not allow new grads to start orientation without having passed nclex. Therefore there is no pay raise after orientation. Pay raises used to be annually, however, with the economy many hospitals have decided not to give any raises and some have even cut pay differentials.:crying2:

Some hospitals pay more for nurses with certs such as ACLS, PALS, CCRN etc, some do not pay anything extra. As for plateauing out of pay raises with experience. It seems like a lot of hospitals only like to think you gain more knowledge for around 10 to 15 years. At this point if you are still a bedside nurse then no more raises, apart from the odd cost of living raises.:uhoh3:

I am not too sure why you think getting your masters will stop this from happening. A masters will let you get out of bedside nursing and get a different job with a different pay scale etc. If you stay with your masters, and I work with several, then it doesn't change anything.

Two of the three hospitals in MD that I have worked for did hire what they call graduate nurses and started orienting them while they studied for NCLEX so they do get two different pay rates. I think the rates listed here are for actual new nurses not graduate nursing rates though.

PRMC starting new grad pay is $23.50. Genesis nursing homes are over $26

Johns Hopkins Bayview Hospital starting salary for New Grad is $24.50 and $3.50 diff for e/n/wk
