Maryland BSN hopefuls for Fall 2012

Anyone else preparing for fall 2012? I'm such a dork about this. I've been planning every single little step of this. :lol2: I'll be submitting my university application in October/November. I'm not worried about getting accepted to the University in general because I have a 3.8 right now, provided A&P2 and micro together don't kill me. Then I'll be sitting for the A2 by January (want to finish A&P2 first) and applying to the BSN program by January/February. Unfortunately the CC I'm in doesn't offer one of the pre-reqs for the university, but I can take that over next summer.

Anyone else with similar plans?

i remember when the aps started to flip over to "committee ready" - good luck to all and remember to breathe deeply!

WOW! I can't believe people aren't talking more, is there another link for UMSON Fall 2012, bsn?

I am hating the waiting game and am debating applying to MC as option number 2.

How are you all keeping yourselves busy, and what are your second options?

Could this be a good sign? I received an email from a committee member asking what classes I was taking to finish up my prereqs. I received the email last week, and I almost freaked out, but I don't want to get ahead of myself!

I was surprised by the lack of recent chatter also.

I was doing ok with waiting until this past week. Now I'm a nervous wreck and I feel so on edge.

My other option is an RT program which I just found out I got into for the Fall. The only problem is that they want me to give them an answer by April 2 and I'm concerned I won't know what's going on at UMSON until after that point. But from reading previous posts, I realize that there are several people in the same position.

In terms of keeping myself busy, I'm failing miserably!! If I could just keep myself away from the computer...

Since I'm not in school this semester and not working I have far too much time on my hands. I think today I'm going to spend some time outside as I have neglected my gardening duties for far too long. Later I'll start on some spring cleaning. In the rare moments of clarity I tell myself that I should aim to do all of the time consuming things that I haven't been able to do in the past because of school while I have the time now. Regardless of what program I choose, this time next year I won't have the same kind of free time.

Yeah I'm extremely anxious to hear back too..However, I didn't feel a point in talking bout it...just stresses you out more..I applied to Stevenson and Howard Community College also.. I was admitted to both..and I am still on the fence if I'm going to do UMB or HCC..I already have a BS degree and I don't really care to get another if I don't have too..I'm looking at RN to MSN programs ..I'm just a little concerned as I keep hearing talk on how RNs with ADNs aren't getting hired and by 2020 all RNs will have to have at least a BSN..has anyone else heard this?? I know the Masters programs are transitioning into DNP programs starting 2015. Is this going to be all Masters programs though?

I think they are just confirming that you will have all your prerequisite classes done before the semester starts in August - maybe they are not sure for some reason. I am afraid you cannot read anything else into it.

I think you are rightly concerned about how marketable your ADN degree is, if the number of RNs who are applying for our RN to BSN program are any indication. Also, while I do not know about other schools, all our master's programs require the BSN. We do have an RN to MS program, but the degree earned is a BSN. The only difference is that these students can take three graduate core courses, required by all of our MS programs. So when the RN - MS students graduate, they are awarded a BSN but have 10 graduate credits which will be accepted by the UMB masters program they apply and are admitted to. Almost all the masters programs will transition to DNP - at least that is the plan.

Because you already have a BS, have you looked at the Clinical Nurse Leader accelerated master's program? You should and there is an Entry Into Practice Open House on March 31 which features the BSN and CNL programs side by side so that a student can get the information they need to decide which one is a better fit for them.

The talk for years has been that the entry level into nursing should be the BSN. The Institute of Medicine report which was done last year also strongly recommends this. Also, to earn magnet status, hospitals must have a certain percentage of BSN prepared nurses. Add to that the mounting evidence that BSN nurses are associated with better outcomes and I think you can see where the future is heading.

All this having been said, some folks can't afford anything more than the ADN now and go back for the BSN later. There are lots of online RN to BSN programs out there which could be done while working, including ours.

You have lots to think about.

Yes, I did look into the program. One of my lab professors was in the UMB CNL program. However, I was concerned about getting as much work experience as possible before applying for my masters. I'm looking to work in the NICU, and a lot of the programs I have researched thus far require you to have at least one year if not two years experience. I already have student loans from my previous bachelor's degree so I was looking at the least expensive route, which would allow me to continue working. It is indeed a lot to think about as I have asked many people in the field what should I do, and I have gotten back numerous responses. Thanks for your input. It gives me a little more to think about.

I know of VERY few. Maybe one or two in each class. It is not conceptually designed to be a part time program. There is a part time plan of study which takes seven full semesters (meaning fall and spring only) so that is three and one half years as opposed to two. There is no normal when it comes to part time. It's tricky because most of your classes are prerequisites for the next classes. I would never recommend doing the program part time if it is at all possible to do it full time.

@Chrabi417 : I understand how you feel. I finished all my prerequisites Summer 2011. I couldn't apply for Spring 2012 because of loose ends I needed to take care of at work. I feel like I've wasted an entire year. The weather is helping maintain my sanity. This mild winter has kept me outdoors instead of obsessing on my computer with cabin fever.

It looks like people found out last year around April 6 but maybe we will get lucky and find out a little sooner. I wish the application deadlines would have have been Jan.1 instead of Feb. 1. It would have been nice to have the decision come out around the same time that other schools send out acceptance letters....Good luck!

My status has been 'committee ready' for a very long time. It's close to the end of March 2012. It is nail biting.
