We don't use a specific score but look at all of them carefully. Reading comprehension would probably be most important.

Thank you Grey Lady. You are a great help to all of us on the board.

One more month of sitting and waiting. I should be used to hurry up and wait by now. The process of getting accepted into the Army Nurse Corps was another long chapter to achieving my goals of becoming a nurse. The Army even has their own form of torment like the TEAS, it is called having to take the SAT. Picture a 34 year old man sitting in a high school classroom with a bunch of 16-18 year old kids taking the SAT. I think I was older than the proctor and I barely fit in the desk. :)

Hello Grey Lady,

I have been wondering about how all sections of TEAS scores are weighed out as well. dccubano brought up good points. If reading comprehension is the most important, then is there a minimum reading comprehension score?

dccubano,

I'm also an older student too. I currently have my bachelors right now. I retook undergraduate courses that I did not do very well in. After retaking courses, I enrolled in a CNA course. There were a lot of high school students in the theory part of course. I was the oldest student in the entire group. I will finish at the end of March. Army nurse does sound great. I wish you the best on that.

Grey Lady,

Since I am definitely applying for Spring 2013 UMD, I was wondering how much weight does UMD put towards volunteer work and if you have any suggestions on preferred type, I'd appreciate it. I've volunteered many years ago with the elderly (many, many years ago) and although I thought it was enjoyable and it seems that it is easy to jump right into it, it isn't particularly an area of nursing I plan to go into. I'm looking at our local hospitals such as Shady Grove Adventist and Holy Cross but also trying to find opportunities with smaller organizations.

We do not assign specific minimum scores to any part of the TEAS.

We use volunteer experience to indicate level of interest in and commitment to healthcare as well as an indication of how much the prospective student really understands what a nurse does. So, experiences where you have been able to be a close observer or helper of nurses in action would be most valuable.

Hi Gray Lady:

Do you know what's the differences between the in-state applicants and the out-of state appilcants in admission? Is there any quota for in-state appilcants or international appicants? Thanks!

There are no quotas for instate, out of state or international students. The overwhelming number of applicants are in state so we have not had to establish quotas.

Any TEAS score below the national average of around 70 percent is cause for concern. The more below the more the concern. As to why a candidate was not chosen, I can think of no way we can tell an individual applicant why. So many factors are considered by so many admissions committee members among so many applicants with so many qualities to evaluate - it's impossible. There is rarely, if ever, one killing factor.

That having been said, unsuccessful candidates can improve their applications for the next semester either by improving their essays, earning a new batch of great grades, getting impressive healthcare experience, or just being lucky enough to be among a less competitive applicant pool. I wish I had THE answer for you but it just does not exist.

Grey Lady,

Thank you very much for taking the time to provide so much information not just to my question but to all of the other questions you have answered. You've really helped to alleviate some of the stress and anxiety that I have experienced during this process.

Well, yayyy! That is exaclty what I wanted to accomplish. Thank you for your kind words and Best of Luck!

Status went from "Complete Ready for Review" to "Committee ready." The butterflies in my stomach went fluttering away... But there is still more time to be waited... Good Luck to all of my fellow applicants!! :heartbeat

Also, Thanks Grey Lady for the post on what exactly that status means!!
