Johns Hopkins new grad 2011

I work at JHH right now in a unit that is within the department of Surgery but am currently transitioning to JH Bayview to begin in an ICU there. What I can speak to as far as your choice in departments/units is that the Department of Medicine is a whole hodge podge of complex diagnoses (even more than your typical experience) and the MD services/teams that follow these patients can be notoriously unorganized, and can make an RN's work life very difficult in terms of responsiveness and their ability to include the nursing staff in the plan of care.

From my experience the surgical units/teams are run more efficiently, there is a tendency to have fewer bounce back patients, shorter length of stay and all in all, it seems that the outcomes are more positive. Of course I have to generalize from my experience, but Medicine floors here have also been trending to lower census populations and therefore you may experience more opportunities to be called off (take that as you will).

To be blunt, I wouldn't work on a Medicine floor at JHH even if they doubled my pay. The RNs I know who work on such floors are taking all opportunities available to get out and join other departments even to the extent that they leave JHH for other facilities.

Congratulations on the interview! I just got an interview in peds. I live in Florida so I don't know anything about living in Baltimore, all I know is that the opportunity would be awesome. If anyone has any information regarding how the interview is, please share. It would be very helpful. Also, what does share time include and about how long can I expect to be on the floor? Thanks in advance for any suggestions/comments. :)

I haven't read much about share time other than what I've read on these boards (the search feature up to is really good). Just bring scrubs and be open to spending as much time as you can. Some people have had the entire process take 8 hours or so. I've also heard you can do share time with different units if you have several that are open and you're interested in. My flight leaves around 8 that night so I hope I allotted enough time, but I could only spend a day in Baltimore!

The nurse recruiter will talk to you briefly ab out benefits, payrate, medical insurance, parking etc. and then will escort you to the unit you are interviewing on and to the Nurse Manger for the interview portion. The interview itself is not standardized across nursing units, it's a very subjective experience and dependent on the personality of each Nurse Manager. Some choose to use very structured, intense questions and with others its more of a relaxed conversation of your experiences and your future goals, and the structure/workflow of the unit. When I've done share time here it was basically as long as I wanted to be there, so I've done 3-4 hours on the units I was interested in. Even with that amount of time you will never really get a perfect idea of the workflow and the team that you may be joining, but it's a great time to demonstrate your personality, ask questions of the RNs you are working with and gain some insight into how enjoyable and supportive the work environment is on that unit.

I did some share days at JHH a few months ago. I got to the unit around 630 and was provided with scrubs. I followed the nurse during about 6 hours of her shift and just observed. I had to sign confidentiality agreements and wasn't able to perform any care but it was a great learning experience. I would definitely recommend doing as many share days as possible before deciding on where you would like to work.

Hi all,

I just submitted an online application for a new grad nurse job this summer at JHH. The posting was for a position in Medicine, which was the only entry level RN posting I saw besides an entry level position in Peds.

Is this just a sort of gateway application just to get your application for an entry level position on file, and there are actually other units at JHH other than Medicine where new grads can get hired? I'd like to work at JHH but I was hoping to work either ICU or Heme/Onc if possible.

I think it is a type of "gateway" application. I actually applied for a position in oncology, and when the nurse recruiter emailed me back, I told her my top choices for units were Medicine and Critical Care. So if they contact you, just be honest about what your preferences are! Good luck!

Great! Hopefully I'll hear back from the nurse recruiter there within a couple weeks. It sounds like they're pretty flexible about allowing applicants to shadow a nurse there for a day... a good way to find out if you'd fit in with a particular unit.

I went back and looked at the openings again. The opening I applied for was "Nurse Clinician" which is their entry level nursing position. I don't see any openings for that position now. I suggest you call the HR department at JHH and ask them for an update.
