John hopkins hospital and starting salary

If you are a new nurse there is no better start to your career than Hopkins. I work at the bayview campus and have learned so much. benefits are very good and reasonable. You don't make as much money working at hopkins than you do working somewhere else but its the name you are getting too. There is not much way to move up and make more money per hour at hopkins as they have scheduled % raises which are pitiful. If I wanted to make more money I would have to take my experience and go somewhere else. I would probably make 3 or 5 more dollars an hour right now if I moved and it will take me 5 years to get that at hopkins, or longer. Its kind of a drag but you can't be choosy in this economy. Bayview is not on the PACE system and you work 36 hrs a week and time and a half after 40 hrs and get paid differentials for weekends and nights and for float pool. Good luck!

I'm glad you are happy and feel you are getting a good learning experience but I find it offensive that Hopkins thinks their "name" counts as financial compensation. Sorry but losing $5 an hour is $10,000 a year. Thanks but no thanks.

I worked out the hours and if I worked OT on my floor I would make more money because we get time and a half for holidays and OT. All Main Campus floors except for Maternal Newborn/OBGYN are rotating day/night-so much so that most nurses just go to straight or mostly nights because 10 day/10nights in six weeks can be exhausting. I do think its difficult to feel compensated by a "name" but I also feel that our hospitals, despite the locations give great care. I had clinicals at many hospitals in baltimore and there are a few I would never go to unless I was bleeding to death.

I work on the surgical floor and exactly, EXACTLY all the same doctors are on my floor as on the units on Main campus. I know because I recently interviewed at main campus and saw 6 MD's I know from my floor. I think that Bayview is an equal campus as far as caliber of nurses and MD's.

We are all in it together, so to speak. :):)

I'm about to interview at JHH for two positions. I'm a new grad RN (BSN) and am wondering about salaries. Can anyone who started in 2012 give me a ball park on the hourly rate? Do they still pay night or weekend differential? Thanks! Super excited about this opportunity!

Are you still working in Bayview? I just had my phone interview this morning and I hope I did justice. The recruiter seemed really nice. She said she would give me a call after she speaks with the manager and she gave me her number too in case I needed to ask her something. Is that a good sign? plase help! thanks! Do not work here - if you know any better. The benefits are getting worse and worse and turn over rate is high on most floors. Pay is one of the lowest in Baltimore. Also, if you're not from the area, moving to Baltimore is going to be a culture shock. The whole city is sketchy.

Hopkins knows that it has a great reputation and therefore can afford to treat it's nurses like 3rd class citizens and low on the totem pole. It is one of the richest institutions in the world and keeps it's money by paying their employees the lowest they can get away with.

I repeat - do NOT work here. Not worth the mark on your resume.

Where in Baltimore do you make $5 more an hour as a new grad?

JHH is salaried for the RN PACE program--which means you get the same paycheck every two weeks. You also are expected to work 40 hours a week so basically every 4th week you work 4-12's instead of 3-12's. So technically you work more hours but you are also paid for that as well. It calculates in differentials for holidays, weekends, and nights. It equals out to a little over $28/hour or $59k a year. This is comparable to UMMC. As far as I know, Sinai Hospital has the most competitive pay for new grads. The base pay at Sinai is about $26/hr +$3 nights, +2.50 weekends so on a weekend night you could be making almost $33/hr. UMMC starts you off at around $24 with differentials. Keep in mind how much health insurance is too--that is usually taken out pretax which is nice. Hope this helps!

Im currently employed as an RN in Bayview. I love my unit and the people I worked with. I started 2011 and they start me at $24.60/hr and currently im making $25 and few cents /hr.My good freind was hired at JHH downtown a yrs ago and he is making $5.00 more.
