Hopkins new hire

U.S.A. Maryland

I just accepted a position at Johns Hopkins. I am thrilled, but as a new grad, I am a little intimidated and nervous about it all. Just wondering if anyone has any advise, or any insight into the orientation/spring program.

Hello guys!

I'm a new grad that will also start on Halloween. I'm a little confuse about how the spring program works, do we have weekly classes for the 12 months? Are we going to be on day&night rotation throughout orientation or strickly days?

Congrats! I was wondering the same thing. I emailed recruitment last week but haven't heard anything back. I am just trying to figure out day care stuff, and wondered how many nights I will have to worry about each week. I got the orientation packet in the hopes that it would give me more info, but it only addresses the first week. It may be different for each unit. What unit are you going to?

AH congrats! What unit did you get a job in? I just met two other new grads who will be starting on Halloween as well when I went to get my physical and go to the M Board of Nursing for compact endorsement.

I don't think anyone knows excatly how the SPRING program works. I'm sure we'll find out more information during orientation. The first two days are general orientation and I believe the Wednesday of our first week is just new graduates. So I'm sure they will explain it all then.

My job offer says day/night rotation but it probably depends on who's orienting you and what their schedule is like.

I know we have "class" every month but I dont know if it's weekly or every other week, etc.

We start in three weeks and I have everything completed (I believe) but I still feel like I'm missing something. haha

Thanks jlo6RN & LAtoMD, i have all the same questions you guys have. I feel like I am walking into the unknow:) The orientation packet provides very little info on the process. I know hospitals in CT keeps new grads strickly on day shift. My orientation is 16wks on the CPCU.

@ LAtoMD have you relocated yet? I when to MDBON last week to my surprise i had to be finger printed anyway I got my temp. lic. i also did the endorsement online.

@jlo6RN are you from the area if yes what are some good places to rent?

Yes we actually moved up here September 16. I'm from New Orleans, moved to the D.C. with two of my classmates (both RNs) but none of us had that much luck with jobs so we decided Baltimore would have more opportunities for us. I've got one roommate at UMMC and one at Sinai who both just started this past week.

Aooarently the MDBON is a lot slower than the VABON so it's best that you got the temporary license because it can take a while for the permanent license to come in.

Just an FYI are you looking for apartments or houses? I live with two other RNs (a couple) and we're splitting a two bedroom apt 3 ways at the Avalon Centerpoint in downtown Baltimore. It's less than 2 miles from the hospital. Rent isn't that bad, just parking is a little expensive.

I'll have all my stuff there by next week. I'm currently staying in Hyattsville with family but it's a 45-60min drive into work, so i'm looking for something closer. I must say am a little scared of being in the city given all the horror stories i have heard. I called a few communities in the city that i was told had good reputation but they have a 6 month wait list. I'm going to be checking out Owings mills in the coming week.

Congrats to your friends:up: my class mates thinks i'm crazy for moving but i see it has a great investment in my future:)

@CT2MD, Congrat on your new job. I am also offered an interview on the W4A soon, I am super nervous, dont know what to expect. How did it go for you? did you know you got the job right after the interview? how long did you wait after the first interview? how long was the interview? pls do you mind sharing any info about how it went for you.

As of where to live, Owings mills is okay (my opinion), I have been living here for 4yrs, I feel pretty safe here. I have no idea how much an apartment goes for. it is 25-30mins drive to JHH (no traffic), but over 1hr during traffic. thanks.

Hi there!!! Excited for you good news!! I am a new grad from Orlando Florida and will start on Neuro/Meyer 9 on jan 3. Looking for a place or a roommate. Do you know anyone preferably an fellow RN.

Any insight will help

@majesticRN congrats on your interview! I actualy got interviewed for CSICU initially, my questions were very unit specific like how certain equipments works and describing clinical senerio in which you worked with a critically ill(heart/lung transplant)patients how they progress from surgery to recovery. Also, a few prioritizing & what you would do type questions. My second interview I was given a few emergency situations and I was asked to explained what I would do in these situations. How do you deal with difficult patients and their family members. Both interview took about 4 hrs. each including 2hrs of shared time. Both interview when well but i felt the CSICU was a bit over my head, i let them know my concerns & the NR set up a second interview the same day with another unit. After my second interview i was told by the NM to think about my shared time & let her know if I really wanted to be on her unit, I send her a email two day later and within 24 hrs I got my offer letter. I'm not sure what type of unit W4A is but try to be familiar with things that are specific to that unit. Be honest with what you have to offer and take your share time seriously it will give you an idea of what the unit has to offer including patient population and the culture of such unit.

P.s Try to say calm & be yourself if you love what you do it will show and they won't be able to do anything but love you;)

Best of luck!!!
