Working with mostly women. Heaven or Hell?

by lsvalliant Premium Member

Hi guys,
I know this is the MENS student forum but I am curious about your perspectives. Do you think you get more respect or less because your a male? Do you think working as a nurse will help you with your own female relationships? Do you wish there were more men in nursing just to balance out the estrogen vibe. I do. Just wondering?

Heaven and hell... Flirting with the hot ones and shooting the sh*t with them is fun. On the other hand, the drama and dumb attitude of "I am so important" that many of these female nurses possess is plain out annoying. Me personally, I cannot relate with 80% of these other female nurses. So I have learned to just keep my mouth shut and get the job done so I can just get out of the drama saturation and go fishing.

I find that when there are five female nurses to one male nurse the environment is "stiff." On the other hand, when I did rotations on a unit where there was an EQUAL mix of males and females, the environment had a laid back yet professional vibe. Too much of anything is a bad thing, including a room full of same gendered people.

Yes - I get more respect for being male on some floors, others not so much. It just depends on who is around. Doctors do seem to communicate better with male nurses, though, at least where I did rotations that is. Then again, there have been floors where I was treated like scum because I was male. It was very evident on some floors that I "did not belong."

I like working with women. Especially experienced RNs who K N O W E V E R Y T H I N G. Honestly, it doesn't matter what gender they are to me. I make friends easy and i like to help out. Yah, you get abused for being physically stronger sometimes, but I want to learn everything that I can and helping someone else out with stuff that is hard for them makes a great icebreaker to pick their brains.

This is a great example of drama... so you see... it can come from both the XY or the XX.

Badphish, I smell good, look good, and never talk about sports, either.

after posting in this thread, i found myself in one the local ERs, dropping off a patient. It seemed that there were more males than females. so on that thought i think it all depends what area of nursing u r working in. I would bet that med-surg, and of course L&D are female "heavy"
