I find that when there are five female nurses to one male nurse the environment is "stiff." On the other hand, when I did rotations on a unit where there was an EQUAL mix of males and females, the environment had a laid back yet professional vibe. Too much of
anything is a bad thing, including a room full of same gendered people.
Yes - I get more respect for being male on some floors, others not so much. It just depends on who is around. Doctors do seem to communicate better with male nurses, though, at least where I did rotations that is. Then again, there have been floors where I was treated like scum because I was male. It was very evident on some floors that I "did not belong."
