Hi lsvalliant,

I think it really depends. I love working with men and women. I truly believe there should be more men working as nurses (and more female working as firefighters). I don't feel I get more respect simply because of my gender, but more because of my attitude toward the staff and the patients. Unfortunately, I've seen biased behaviours because of my genitals; senior patients believing I was an MD, some nurses openly saying that men don't have their place in the profession, etc. But those are the exceptions. Studying nursing as certainly helped me not only with female relationships, but all relationships.

Do you think working as a nurse will help you with your own female relationships? Do you wish there were more men in nursing just to balance out the estrogen vibe. I do. Just wondering?

Any female that reads this, this isnt a person attack on you..but rather a generalistic statement....But WHENEVER there is alot of women there is drama...work..school...social gatherings..wherever......in my lpn program there are 30 students, 28 women and 2 men...me and a married 55yr old.....From my experience...as long as you look but dont touch you should be fine...the moment you try and pass friendship with any of these ladies...problems arise...

Hmmm...as much as i hate to say it I must agree. There is always seems to be at least one female that just has to stir the pot I would much rather prefer to have an even mix of Estrogen and Testosterone

Well my perspective may be abit biased. I have worked in direct care for over a decade and 90% of my coworkers have been women, almost all of my supervisors were women, and now in my RN program 29 of my classmates are women + me. I'm older then most of my classmates so their concerns and goals are a little off from mine (they are all excited about what concerts are coming to town or planning a weekend out partying and drinking while I am wondering if I will have time to mow my lawn this weekend), and I almost envy you younger guys who get a kick of being surrounded by young ladies - I am married, happily and have been for 13 yrs. Honestly I think at times my testosterone levels dropped drasticly after age 35 because I really don't think of my "fellows" in class in that way and only seem to remind myself when we are taking apical pulses off of one another (oh yea that's right...you guys got those things on your chest).
The only thing about working with men vs women is that I rarely if ever have had another male tell me something (anything, a compliment, a joke, report, a greeting) and have to think hmmmmm what did he mean by that? Men tend to be fairly simple and straight forward. The only reason I know women are more complex in their speaking Is that I listen to the class gossip, float freely from one subgroup and clique to another. A lot of what the ladies say to one another doesn't always match up with what they were saying to someone else earlier. That may just be youth, but we have a couple of older students my age who engage in the same thing. After all is said and done I rather enjoy working with women, have no concerns with female supervisors, and I like to think that I am not entering a female field of work..but that I am entering a newer field of work for men.

I feel like I probably get more respect than I deserve, but not being a woman I can't really say I get more because I'm a guy.

As for helping me with my own relationships, depends on what you mean. I got a lot of female friends out of nursing school, but no girlfriends. .
Heres a tip to any young guys going into nursing school, if you run into some attractive girl on campus and she asks you what you are majoring in, say you are pre-med =). You flat out say nursing school and they just assume you are gay...

As for the female dominated workplace? Gender isn't the issue so much as personality. I find that I get along just fine with most other nurses provided they arn't nasty to each other or the patients. That goes with men or women. I can't stand a nasty nurse.

Any one else devastated that 90% of the girls in your classes are either married, engaged, or always in a serious relationship?

At first I thought I was going to suffer but I was pleasantly surprised to find out I was very accepted within the predominantly female environment. I like to work around woman. Sometimes is a bit too distracting when you have these amazing cute young nurses all over you and the energy is just intense. I get along even with the old crusty nurses. I find that I am respected and find the female nurses to be very special I love nurses, I marry one, so. Of course people are people and will always have problems sometimes at the workplace. I have not started to work yet but I feel that the patients think I'm am a doctor and sometimes during my rotation I have entered the room with a very experienced nurse but the patients and their family always asked me questions as if I was the guy. It's too bad and that must really **** the female nurses.

I was kind of nervous about working around mainly female nurses. I worked in other women-dominated workplaces before. I'm gay and not particularly open about it in the workplace; I get very annoyed when a female co-worker thinks if she flirts with you a little bit you can catch her slack, or that they can make unwanted comments to you that would have them screaming sexual harrassment if the shoe was on the other foot. So far, knock on wood, my experience with (female) nurses has been different. All the women I work around are extremely professional.
