So how does it feel like to be a male nurse

So i just started my college one week ago. Even though I already picked my major( Health science which i dont know exactly what that does), i started thinking about switching my major to nurse which i've thought about since this May.

I am a guy in my 18 and I am wondering how it feels to be a male nurse(I think it might seem awkward for those none-male nurse but i think it will be cool) and do we do anything different than regular female nurse. I mean it would be awkward if we have to take care of a female patient.

and I would also like to have some advice as a male nurse.

I've been a male nurse for almost 7yrs. If you're single you'll love it (if the class has some babes lol jk). I don't think I was ever treated differently. All in all it's a great profession, A LOT of different opportunities (travel, nurse practitioner, nurse anesthetist, home care, management, i could go on and on). I'm 27 and have had patients who are the same age and younger than me. Just gota act like a boss when you walk in the room and they don't seem to mind lol. Try it out, shadow and see if it's something you like. Remember, there are tons of nursing jobs in the hospital (med-surg, telemetry where you watch a heart monitor, operating room, critical care, and more). Give it a go.

Many Nurses are males. Everyone is treated equally (males and females).

I think we should be passed this stage of asking how someone is treated because of their gender in a particular field. Being a Nurse could imply that your either male or female. Just as being a doctor could imply your either male or female.

Honestly I get so much attention that I can't stand it. And I'm not talking about getting 'picked on'... It's like people are obsessed with the three of us in our class of 40. I know that probably sounds a little inane but I'm serious. And I'm no Channing Tatum (or whoever the ladies are currently drooling over) either. There's nothing negative about it.

I'm a nursing student and also work as a PCA. Today, I had an older female patient that wanted a bed bath. She originally asked the RN (also male) if a female could do it, but I ended up giving her the bath with a female coworker. After that and a few other things, she said, "you're just as good as a woman, even better than a lot of them!" I just laughed. She later said something similar, and said something like, "so men can do this too!" I said, "yes, men and women can do anything they want!". I thought it was pretty amusing and knew I had to share that.

Ive been a nurse for 4 years now. I had my own contracting company before nursing. It was hard to leave, but looking back I wouldn't trade it for anything. Benefits are fabulous, 4 days off a week is phenomenal, and I can pick up as much OT as I want. Some weeks I have worked 36 hours of overtime just to pay for a vacation or christmas.

You will constantly hear things like: "are you my doctor?", "hey doc!", "are you really a nurse?", "can you help me boost my patient?". You shrug is off and are proud to say, "nope, I'm your nurse". Cause only you know how hard you have worked to get there.

It is a challenging, fun, rewarding career. By no means is it easy. Your first job may be on a med-surg or Tele unit and you will quickly realize it's not what you thought it would be. Sh#t rolls down hill and often lands on nurses. You will feel at times like a secretary, CNA, server, customer service rep, drug dealer and punching bag all in the same hour. But...... once you transfer to the ED or ICU (and you will want to) you will find your niche. I now recover fresh open hearts and take patients with LVADs and I love it. Work for me is rewarding, challenging and fulfilling. If you are not happy in nursing, its your own fault. There are countless avenues to take.

I say to anyone thinking about it, go for it. Nothing to lose.

I'll pass commenting on how it feels to be a male nurse but I can tell you that it feels great to have a job pulling down a solid six-figure income in a very stable field.

I noticed that... even as a student. However, it's not that bad of a deal... you might be able to barter your forklift ability for someone's assistance with something else.
