Men have it harder?

Nursing Students Male Students

Published

I was doing my midterm eval and my clinical instructor said something l thought was interesting. Basically she came out and said to me that I would have it harder being a male and more would be expected of me by patients/doctors versus a female. That I would have to know more and be more competant than my female peers. That if I didn't I would be respected less.. Can anyone explain there experience being a man stuck in a womens world? Maybe some examples of personal experiences

Truly interesting point!! Perhaps a better place to post this would be the Male Nurse forum rather than the Student forum. I would sure be interested in their responses.

Thanks for posting this!!

I think that is the opinion of your instructor. I have not experienced that in my clinicals, and i have talked to a few male nurses and they never expressed that more was expected of them than females. It might of been that way 20 -30 years ago.

Mostly its a bunch of BS...except when an instructor says something like that.

It's the instructor with the issue, not the rest of the world.

Just thought it was interesting... another conclusion l've noticed is l think she's a lil harder on me... and all my patients are men. But it's ok she's a great CI and l'm learning alot

Ive heard that L&D is potentially a nightmare for guys.

the worst nightmare you ever had pales in comparison to ob:chair:

LMAO......... so true. I hated OB. My professor would say don't forget to assess the fundus.. I'd think myself rub the fund rub the fundus... EWW EWW

In my 27 years as a nurse I have not seen this...I have seen some other things though with male nurses. A lot of times some elderly seem to trust them more....the male nurses tend to overall be more assertive than some nurses when it comes to procedures getting done and what i mean by this is for example..the male ED nurses will often poke the patient multiple x (ie 6-7) before they stop and ask for help...women seem to call for back-up sooner. of course this is not every male. They also support or nurture the patient and their families in different ways than the females.Thse are just a few i can think of now.

I think men have it easier actually... the director of the nursing program I'm applying for said that being a Male would help my chances of being accepted, and one encounter I had at an old job with a female nurse was a bit unusual. The woman came in and was very kind until I told her I was applying for Nursing school She kind of scoffed at me and told me I would probably start at a higher pay and advance through the ranks much quicker than my female counterparts. She seemed pretty annoyed by this.
