Maths, Chemistry and All Other High School Jazz

by massimo

Gentlemen,

For starters, I’m here to give a shout out to all and tell you how overwhelmed I am to know that I am not the odd (male) one that wants to go into nursing. We need more males in this profession – ha!

Now, the questions:

I’ve been accepted to commence a Bachelor in Nursing program with an Australian University. I applied for the place based on my work credentials - 30 years old male, 10 years of working experience, currently a training manager in a multi-national organization dealing with travel-medical services and medical evacuation etc – I honestly don’t think that my academics got me that place (btw I have a Dip. in Counselling & Communication) so, if you lot can advise me regarding the importance of Maths, Chemistry, Physics and what not in nursing – what’s your opinion of this, are they applied on a daily basis? I pretty much suck at Maths so kind of nervous about the whole thing really but I won’t hesitate to study Maths all over again if need be.

Also, has anyone here any experience as an International Student? It be nice to hear about the transition one has to go thru when studying abroad.

I am just doing the LPN right now, so I can tell you is what we concentrate alot on at my school. Anatomy and Physiology and Fundamentals of Nursing were two biggest my first quarter. We also had Pharm (which uses a good amount of math-conversion, calculating drip rates, ect.), Trends (Nursing History) and Nutrition. Our 2nd quarter we moved onto Med Surg, Mental Health, and more Pharm. Right now in 3rd we have Pediatrics, OB, MORE PHARM, and Mental Health. In few weeks in our Final quarter we will have another Med Surg section, MORE PHARM, Trends, and Geriatric Care. I personally haven't had any kind of Chemistry come into play, but for Bachelors I am not sure. We do alot of math though. I hate it!!

I woldn't freak out too much about the math. If you did OK an college algebra you'll be fine with doseage calculations and drip rates. Nurse math is a bunch of the same ol' stuff. Once you get it down yhou'll be doing it in your sleep.
