I find all these comments really interesting. I've just been accepted to start a BSN program in January, and there's another whole thread on this website about whether there is any pro-male-for-sake-of-diversity going on in NS admissions.

My new RN boss is a guy. Note to ladies: Guys don't do pinky swears. Clarify your secret hand shake. We do this knuckle bump thing -- a dab.

I've never had an issue. Being an attractive (at least I think I am) young man helps since I can play that up and joke around with the other staff. Sounds bad but it has saved me when floating a couple of times now. I felt some unwelcomness during school on my OB rotation and from a few faculty, but I had 0 interest in OB and most everyone knew that. If it's an issue, consider the VA system. The majority of the patients are crotchety old men and we have a good mix of male and female staff. If thats not your thing find where you are happy and go for that, who cares what that crusty old nurse thinks, she is on her way out anyway.

^^^ Agree 100%. Who gives 2 sh*ts if these hags don't welcome you. Ignore them and do your job. It never says in the job description that you must be "liked" and to "socialize" with all your co-workers.

You got hags? Poor boy. All I've encountered are sex crazed goddesses with wit and humor.

So far it's been not much more than an acknowledgement of the obvious differences, and moving on from there. The nature of nursing tends to be matter of fact about most things.

The only time I've felt unwelcome is caring for female patients from Middle Eastern & Eastern European cultures. There is the occasional old battle axe, but she's akin to your senile grandfather who yells at interracial couples when he's in public. For me, OB was one of the best rotations--got pushed from party to party; like I was on an Amish rumspringa or something.

Geeze....sad but true most nurses are sex crazed ladies (in my case not goddesses lol ) But one thing I do know is how to speak to a lady and make them like me. I was also told this by my CNA instructor, "we women really are dumb. When a woman walks by and a male says something nice to them they remember it and, that can bennifit you in the future" I have always done this anyway's but pay them a compliment. Nothing very personal but something general. Like, your hair looks nice! Did you do something different to it? We all know how women love their hair....lol....also they like men to listen to them TRUST ME ON THIS GUYS!!!!!! They like to have a males opinion on things too. Then once they feel safe with you...it will all come out and you can go in for the kill (figurativly speaking). They will love you forever. Take it from me men, if i actually liked girls there would be a pimp in your midst...lol Peace!

Im glad to see a general positive outlook on male nurses. That was one of my concerns going into the nursing field.
