L&D, Postpartum, Women's Health = DREADFUL

Nursing Students Male Students

Published

I'm in the 2nd semester of my RN program and we have to take an entire semester of L&D, postpartum and women's health. I need an 80% to pass and have a 77%. We have 2 more tests left so I could still possibly pass but it's going to be REAL tough.

Did any of you guys have a hard time with these classes? Any thing you did to get you through it would be so helpful. For me, this is like learning a foreign language and a whole semester of this seems like overkill.

Thanks guys!

no surprise, not many male nurses flock to those areas.

you just gotta be disciplined and pay attention, don't let your mind wander and/or not absorb what you're being taught because you aren't interested.

I cant be of much help. I didnt pass the first time through. Our teacher is very hard as she goes off on tangents and is absolutely brutal in clinicals.

You didn't pass either? I don't think i'm going to either but i'm going to keep trying. I have 2 tests left and i'm already 3% behind and really struggling.

In our program, if you fail two classes you're out of the program.

So I'm a little worried that if I fail this class in my 2nd semester, i'm doomed.

Most in the program say the 3rd semester is the toughest because of the med surg rotation and a lot of people drop out or fail out then. I'm really considering just cutting my loses and take the LPN exam (if I have to take this class over again) and then being done with it.

Sorry you had to take it over again. Hope you've recovered and moved on.

Well im neck deep in it again. Our class you have to pass a certain number of tests no matter what your percentage is. I didnt make that cut but passed clinical just fine so I was allowed to join right back into the next class ( with my ex  ). It is so much easier the second time around. Dont get too down about it is all I can say. I stayed positive the whole time and said if I am doing it again, im going to kick its ass twice as hard and make it through.

I'm not having issues at all. Then again, a guy's experience in OB comes down to attitudes - his, his instructors, and those of the staff at the clinical site. A male student has to want to learn and not think that it doesn't matter/interest him. The instructor and staff at the clinical site need to welcome the male student just like any other nursing student and not intentionally exclude him from experiences in clinical. Additionally, the instructor has the added responsibility of correcting any such poor attitudes in the clinical staff.

It is all about how you approach the clinical rotation. MY OB clinicals were actually extremely pleasant and I enojoyed them. I finished my OB class with an overall score of 98% and was told by the teacher of clinical rotation that I should look into specializing in OB once I get my RN because I have a gift for it she said.

Sadly this is not the case. While a good attitude is required, there are still OB units (and clinical instructors) who are rather hostile to men, no matter what the student's approach to the rotation is. You and I were placed on units where such was not the case.

However, I do agree that our fellow men in nursing school who start out with a bad attitude towards the OB clinical are part of the problem, not the solution.

Yeah I get what u are saying about the instructors and some of them could be a pain but I was very thankful to get a really good teacher who has been doing L & D for like 34 years and she loves her job and was just awesome in class as well as in clinicals. I guess I lucked out.

I wish I could trade places with you! At my school we only got THREE weeks of OB!

One more week of OB clinical hell and I can't wait until its over. I've had no issues with the nurses on our unit. In fact they have been supportive and encouraging, and thoroughly understand that I feel out of sorts. I loved the NICU, and admired the nurses and doctors who

are devoted to keeping preemies alive. The nursery was fun. Hard to frown at newborns. They are almost as cute as puppies. Postpartum is purgatory. I see no role for male nurses in PP.My instructor who is obsessed with having me do postpartum assessments, keeps telling me this is what nurses do. Yes it is what some nurses do. But it will never be me. Nothing will change my mind about OB. As soon as the NCLEX is finished my textbooks bought used

as cheaply as I could find them are going in a dumpster. Never more never more.
