I used to think a PhD was for me but all the "nursey" stuff crammed down our throats in nursing school is just too much for me. I'm a hard-science, quantitative guy and the "nursey" stuff is too much psych / spiritualism / metaphysics for me.
At this point, the plan is to go for my NP, but the plan might get hijacked because I'm drawn to all that psych / spiritualism /metaphysical stuff. I've even got Sprituality In Nursing - Standing On Holy Ground by Sister Mary Elizabeth O'Brien as my bedside reading.

I wonder if there's much money in it...

Will be an LPN this July - going straight into the LVN-RN transition (ADN), then spending two years on my BSN. After that, I'm going to apply to law school, medical school and NP school. Whichever I get into will be my path!

Great question!
I am a young dude (24), one of the new generations of future NPs.
My Plan:
Accelerated BSN- Work 8-10 months combined Med-surg and Trauma
Take the CEN exam
Go to NP school, work while I'm at it.

It is often hard for FNPs to get hospital rotations without acute care experience, and the CEN for a BSN RN is a great way to do it without having to do an additional acute care certificate course.

Hoot male NPs!

I wrap up my first semester in an accelerated program tonight when I finish my psych rotation. Al my finals are done.

I am not sure, but if I do go beyond this BSN I'm leaning towards the DNP. It seems like a faster course (I think around here it's three years and a lot of it is online work).

My problem is picking a specialty first. OR is out, it's just too dull for me. Floor nursing is unapealing, and I I didn't dig psych very much. I still need to do OB and peds to see how I like those.

I also want to see how I feel about wound care, and if I like it I am thinking about hyperbarics. The PACU looks interesting and ER with some time as flight nurse also holds some appeal.

Other than wound care, I am not sure how well those other areas would do with a DNP and working reasonalbe hours.

NP for sure... I have no interest in being a nurse what so ever. During clinicals, all I can do is think to myself "I do not want to constantly have these doctors and NPs breathing down my neck and barking out orders to me." I don't know, maybe this is just me. I want to be a chief, not an engine. I find being just a RN to be very unchallenging and know I would be miserable being one.

I am just starting my ADN, but already have a B.S. in Biological Science and the FNP program at Duke just requires you to have a bachelors degree, it doesn't have to be in nursing, so this may be something I look in to. Also ECU (East Carolina University) has an RN to MSN pathway that also lets you start on your FNP without a BSN, you just have to take some BSN classes before starting the Masters portion, but who knows where life will lead me.

AMEN. I cannot imagine going from bean counter, waiter or whatever to a NP via direct entry. The experience gained on the floor is a MUST. I'm light years from where i was coming out of school as an RN and still not ready to jump in as a NP. I think about 5 years of GOOD experience is a must, but what do i know...

I do have a ten year plan and CRNA is at end of it. Plans change all the time though. Heck, I only been in nursing program 1month...lol. But I got goals
