I hold doors for men or women. When they don’t say thank-you, I generally speak up with “You’re Welcome!” Then I get the “thank-you.”

It’s all about training people on how to be polite.

Did it this afternoon at my CNA information session - almost didn't get a seat in the lecture hall because of it!

I usually like to step in then hold the door from the inside so it's easier to pass the torch to the next dude, but for the ladies, I usually hold the door from the outside.

Yes, I do it for both sexes. When I was younger it was about common courtesy.

Now I can't help but notice that it is really about being "the final arbiter of all things."

Case in point: look at all the Bond movies, when he opens doors or pull out chairs for the ladies, he didn't do it "nerdy-ly" instead he did it with an air of "being the final arbiter of all things."

Also "the final arbiter of all things" will either be the 1st or the last thru the door, not in between. Case in point: during the recent State of the Union Address, who's the last to arrive?

Now do all my dudes see why some women view your courteous act as a domineering act instead?

With this said, will I continue to hold doors for everyone? Yes.

I hold the door for anyone following me through a door. I think it's rude not to hold it for someone following behind you.

chivalry is dead. nothing should be done solely because they're female.

i hold the door open for everyone. if it's with a group of friends, i hold it open for all to pass.

if it's a group for 1-4 strangers, i hold it open for all to pass.

if i see a fairly large group / continuous chain of people, i pass the torch. otherwise you're stuck forever.

and although a "thank you" is generally warranted, you should never expect it. you dont hold open doors thinking, "i'm going go open this door for this young man because he will say thank you to me!" you hold open doors because you want to be nice.

as we're all nurses, i'm sure you do tons of things for your patients and sometimes never get a thank you. dont be annoyed by it, just know you're doing the right thing by helping.

Specializes in None yet ;-).

Ahem...not "a man" haha. i agree with you wholeheartedly! chivalry may be a stick in the mud (no pun) but why not just hold the door for everyone!? I find that treating all people regardless of gender/sex in a kind and gracious manner has been the most rewarding frame of mind to adopt.

Make it fun. prop the door open with your foot and then hold your hand up. See how many high-fives you get for keeping chilvary alive.
