Ages of male nursing students?

Nursing Students Male Students

Published

Of the 23 other students comprising the group that I entered nursing school with, three of them are men. The class that is graduating at the end of next week I believe has 1 male student, and as far as I know the class immediately behind mine has 1 as well. This is about 60 students (some classes have had students drop), with 6 of them being males; that's only 1 in 10.

So we know that male nurses are few and far between, but how old are we?

The 1 student in the class graduating next week is 28.

The 1 student in the class that entered the semester after mine is at least 30 (a second career-er I believe).

Of the 4 in my class, 2 are about 45, 1 is 40, and then there is me...21.

How old are you guys? How old when you started school?

Just curious.

I'll be 25 next month.

My program has a few guys, out of the 80 I'd say roughly 10-13

Specializes in ER/OR.

I was 21 When I I started working in hospital back in my country but now I still have to take NCLEX to practice my profession "back to square one"..

There are a few guys in our nursing program, I'm not sure how many, but we are divided into a day and night program. Our school is rather small, and only takes about 60 students combined (30 in each program, day and night). I graduated high school early, finished many of my prerequisites online while still in high school, earned my CNA I while still in high school, and got accepted to the fall 2011 program which starts in August. I am the youngest student that has ever been in the nursing program at my school, I'm 18, and will be 19 in November. When I graduate, I will be 20.

Specializes in Nursing Education, CVICU, Float Pool.

Wow thats something cool patmac! Good for u!

I'm 34 and was accepted to a nursing program today. I would like to say that it is encouraging, maybe even inspiring to see men at 50 plus going after their RN. At 34 I can say that I forgot a lot of math, english, etc. since high school although I did well on the ACT. It is like starting all over again regardless of prior knowledge. To see you guys going after it is like a splash of cool water in my face. Yep, I think I can still compete...lol. Thanks for the posts.

i was 35 when i started.

I finished my prereqs at 51 and am hoping to start my ADN program this fall, which I would be happy to call my 52nd birthday present! Not sure who I waited so long, but I know I'm doing the right thing.

I am 54 and will be graduating in 6 weeks! I own two businesses and work full time.

So if I can do this, anyone can, it is never too late to start. One thing that has made it much better though is having a good friend of mine go through the entire program with me, we are almost the same age. Of the 5 men who started our program, we are the only two left. I might have a bit of an edge though because my friend is in the medical field, and my wife has been a RN for 20 years. Now if I could just get my LPN daughter to go back and finish her RN work..........

There are about 15 guys in our class of 70, most of us are 25-30, but there are a few that are around 20.

I am 44 and already have an undergrad degree and masters degree in other field. I also have my own business but have always wanted to enter the nursing field. So this will be my second career of sorts and am excited! I am finishing up my pre-req's this summer and will begin applying to nursing schools in the next few months. Any advice would be helpful.

Best of luck all.
