I am 33 (3rd career). I started the ADN mobility program this semester. A transition from LVN or paramedic to RN. There were 5 guys out of 27. One is 25, and the rest of us are older than 30. This semester of medsurg took a toll on alot of people. Only about 14 people will make it through to the next semester without having to repeat class. Of the 14, 2 guys including myself will make it to the next semester. Actually only 1 will because I am starting the BSN program this summer. I am curious to see how many males are in this program. I will find out May 4.

Wow, thanks for the great feedback guys. Although we are in the midst of a huge economic slowdown, it is said that RNs are retiring at a rate faster than new grads are being pumped out of academic institutions, and I wanted to guage how many other men are in RN programs around the country. With all of the little old ladies (no offense, little old ladies!) that still work on the floor retiring, I am almost expecting to see a rise in the cumulative % of RNs that are men nationwide.

More importantly, however, I am trying to gain an understanding of the history of men in nursing. It is interesting that nobody who is "older," reported starting school at an age where most people begin their studies, around 18-20. Tweety was the closest, reporting that he began when he was 30 and is now 50. Were men just nonexistent in the nursing realm before him?

That Guy: Yeah, I know what you mean. I've found myself in hot water between girls in class and the main squeeze on one occassion already. She gets so jealous that I go to school with predominantly women and I tell her it's strictly professional, but I still catch a lot of heat for e-mails and text messages, even though their content involves 95% school. It has its pros and cons, but I'll take it.

Gin0theMC: Good luck, have you gotten your results back yet?

OTAS: Thx for taking the time to reply. Third career, awesome! I imagine that it takes a lot of bravery to leave not one, but two careers that you were probably knee deep in to try something like nursing...much respect.

Alexemt: Well with May 4th being only days away, let us know your findings if you care to!

I was 31 when I started, and graduated when I was 33. There were quite a few males in my graduating class. Our class started out with 60, and we graduated 29. Of the 29, 16 were male. That was 7 years ago.

I am 38 and I start this fall. I will finish my ADN when I am 40. My plan is to go on and complete a BSN and possibly a Nurse Practitioner program.....so I will be in school for the next 8 years or so

Good Luck everyone.

My program begins in January... I'll be 53 before the training begins. I've spent the last two years completing prereqs after retiring as a cop.

Soon to graduate as an RN after being an LPN for 2 years and am 53. There are 28 students with 3 males one late 30's, next 43 then me. The girls range in age from early 20's to early 50's pretty equally spaced. is my third career and by far the most rewarding and challanging. Hang in there guys. If this old fart can do it, so can you.
