3 males out of a class of 30, anyone else feel overpowered?

Hey all, I'm 1 of 3 males out of a cohort of 30. I constantly feel like my opinion is unappreciated, that I'm overpowered, and that women, when they're together, are complete and utter *******. It even seems like the female teachers look down upon the men. We're not gay, we hardly even talk, but when we do we get shot down.

Any other males feel this way? No offense to women, it's just how I feel....

Hey, I'm one of 3 guys in a class of 25, and, uh..... no, don't have that problem here

Our instructors treat us all as equals, AND, one's sexual orientation is totally irrelevant. Do you think they'd treat you better/differently if you were gay, or what ??? I don't understand where that's coming from..... and yes, our instructors are female, fwiw....

Nope, sorry - I can't identify with what you're going through in your school....sorry, dude.....perhaps try to "forget" that you're a male and concentrate on learning to be a nurse - gender/orientation is irrelevant (again...)

Hope things work out for ya ...

7 years ago when I graduated from nsg school, we had about 10 men and oh, 100 women in our class. None of them had any problem.

Welcome to nursing. You learn to deal with it pretty fast or you go crazy. Here are a few tips...

1)Girls are different than boys, put them in a big group and they are very very different.

2)Boys see things differently and will often want to speak up in class and express their opinion...even if it seems no one else feels the same way you do, DO IT ANYWAY! Sometimes a room full of girls needs to hear a different, testosterone driven opinion in order to cut through the estrogen cloud.

3)We are appreciated, in school and in the hospital, it just takes 1st year girls a while to figure that out...don't worry, it'll happen.

4)If desired, most nursing schools offer free testicle removal to all male 1st years. Its a relatively painless process that allows males to fit in easier with a large group of women. The procedure is magically reversed the moment the male receives his diploma and walks out the door.

5)Take this opportunity to learn...you will be so much better off later in life when you can understand girls on a different level. :)

The girls offered to remove my testicles without me even asking. I started shaving my arm pits third year...really cuts down on the use of deodorant.

I think I'm much prettier now then before I started nursing school. :nuke:

Best part about all of this is I love the attention at our social functions.

Its great being a guy in a girls world.

Sorry for the intrusion - old lady lurker here....

I just found the original post very humorous. It's always unsettling to find oneself on the 'other side'... whether it's being the only white person in a diverse crowd or a middle aged parent at a Jonas Bros concert. I think this is just another example.

Typical public school environments have male dominated classrooms - well documented in research over the last decade. No matter the teacher's gender, male students usually garner the lions share (pun intended) of attention. So, finding oneself plunked down in a nursing classroom must feel like waking up on Venus - with a female dominated world.

I really appreciate the posters who haven't gotten hung up on gender and just focus on the goal. I did not appreciate references to 'girls' - but as a lurker in 'your' forum, I shouldn't really ***** about that. Just be forwarned - NEVER refer to women in the workplace as 'girls'. No one will take the trouble to point out the error of your ways - we don't have to, as 'we' all share the same reaction - and you will be left scratching your head and wondering what went wrong. If you make the comment in the presence of nurse leaders, it could be a career limiting mistake.

Hang in there guys - we love ya.:yeah: But rest assured that nursing will continue to be a female-dominated profession at least for our lifetimes. The pay is to low and there are still too many stereotypes to attract more men.... even the original poster felt the need to point out that he was not gay.

I am one of three men in a class of 41. I'm married and class president. I realy don't have a problem wiht any of the women in my class except for maybe three or four of them that don't know to be quiet during class. All of my instuctors are female and gave me no trouble except for one while in clinicles and she couldn't even remember my name ( kept calling me by the other guys name)

On a side note, i still have what little of my testicles intact prior to starting school.

So just to make sure that I'm reading you right, your walked into a room full of future nurses and wondered were are all of guys?! Please tell me that no one told you that nursing was going to be a bunch of dudes sitting around telling fart jokes. Come on man, we knew what we were getting into. If someone is giving you a hard time, suck it up! It's a couple of years, and then you'll be doin your thing.

Hang in there,
