Has anyone done this? What was your experience like? How did you find the position? Thinking about doing this in retirement. Few years to go....lol! But, looking at prospects none the less.

Specializes in LTC, Hospice, Case Management.

Leaving a comment mostly so I can follow the thread. My kids are getting very close to leaving the nest & I have a husband that I don't really like so I've also considered this as an option in a couple of years. If you go to indeed.com and just put in interim DON you will come up with several options.

Will be interesting to hear from someone that has actually done this.

Specializes in Gerontology, Med surg, Home Health.

I, too, have thought of doing this when I don't need to be employed full time.

Specializes in Geriatrics, WCC.

OK... putting my hand up. That is what I did from last July until the beginning of this year. Then I have taken time off to get married and to get my son married off. Now getting ready to go out again. I have had headhunters call me over the years, as I'm sure most of you also have. I just happened to grab onto one at the time. If you go to www.jobsinltc.com you can look at all the firms there. I haven't gotten into the details of all of them but, one thing to consider is how your taxes are handled. I was paid a straight hourly pay but, then when they send you a 1099 for taxes.... wham! Since my hotel, food, travel was covered, I didn't have much to deduct to help me out. My tax guy found a few items.

One thing to note, if you have a compact license you are better off since that covers more than 20 states. Otherwise, you will need a license for each state you work in. Length of contracts run anywhere from 2 weeks to a few months. If you are closer to your home, then you could get home each week, otherwise depending on the company you are working for it may be every 3-4 weeks since they are paying for your travel.

Specializes in ICU, CM, Geriatrics, Management.

Perhaps just stating the obvious but... we should presume anyone aspiring to this gig will be required to have had a decent amount of experience as a DON.

Thank you...I will check that link out!

Absolutely. I am planning on getting my certification in DNS. That will give me a better resume and balance as well as a few surveys under my belt. I'm one down and in my window.....:)as a DNS. I have worked this scene though for 35 years as management, floor staff, education etc.
