Re: as DON/ADON ....do you help or hinder your staff?
Most DON's/ADON's I have had contact with are a waste of time when it comes to support for staff. They paste a fake smile on their face, listen to half truths, and then do what ever is easy for them, not the facility, not the resident, nor the staff. Lord, LTC is the pits.

Re: as DON/ADON ....do you help or hinder your staff?
I am a DNS. Have been an ADNS, supervisor,SDC,nurse manager, staff nurse, and nurse's aid. We are not all evil ,uncaring people. If we are short staffed I help the aides. If there are multiple admissions, I do the orders so the nurses can concentrate on the new patient. I argue with corporate over salaries, benefits, and staffing. YOU get paid for all of your time. I am salaried which means when I am there on a Friday night helping with admissions I'm not getting paid for that. Please don't paint us all with the same brush.
I can't explain why some directors are the way they are. I've had every job there is to have so I know what you all are going through. But,unless you've been a DNS, you probably don't have a clue what MY responsibilities are...to the staff, the DPH, corporate and on and on.

Re: as DON/ADON ....do you help or hinder your staff?
We had a terrible winter, several times the roads were closed, staff stuck. Not one time did the DON say "thanks for the effort", or come in when she could get there and help out. Work short of staff every shift, too many things to etell. Just hate it.

Re: as DON/ADON ....do you help or hinder your staff?
I am sorry that your DON seems unappreciative of your super human efforts to do a good job, but in truth as long as your pay checks are on time and of the correct amounts that is all the compensation you need. I know people whose paychecks are late etc,
Of course it is always appropriate to show appreciation to staff for the extra effort during difficult times and I am sorry that your DON missed that opportunity. Some people view showing appreciation as a sign of weakness, they dont know what they are missing.

Re: as DON/ADON ....do you help or hinder your staff?
No, paychecks are not right, have to watch every shift is actually clocked in on clock. Was shorted 24 hours, they wanted me to wait for pay until next pay period, I told them I had bills, I had done the work, and I wanted the pay in an hour. I no longer work there, the problems are still overwhelming, this DON has lost some good staff.
But, LTC has a history of being a mess.

It's bad enough that most people out there think we do nothing all day...we shouldn't have to keep hearing it from people who work in the business. And about your paycheck...have YOU never made a mistake? Why do you act like the payroll people made the error to aggrevate you or cheat you?
I am glad that you have had only good experiences, and maybe its people like you who give LTC a good name but unfortunately there are some poorly run facilities out there - less than there used to be since the inspections have improved (as much as we complain, its thanks to the inspections that things have improved). The truth is historically many (not all) facilities took advantage of their patients and provided poor care thereby necessitating state inspections.
Re the paycheck- its one thing to make one mistake once in a while, but habitually- something is rotten- you have obviously not worked in such a facility. There are facilities that will cheat you- and you have to go over your paycheck with a fine tooth comb.
The best answer to those kinds of jokers is to vote with your feet and find a better run place (like yours).
