Un-necessary classes - page 4
I have had to take some of the most unecessary classes for my degree...we have to take classes in "clusters", such as a Humanistic Appreciation, Cultural Diversity, and so on.... For instance, what... Read More

Jan 4, '06I have a AAS in liberal arts in preperation for a BSN. It is my own personal opinion that all the classes art, history gov..etc is a bunch of hog wash. I would much rather see a ADN or BSN program contain 2 or 4 years of classes that actually pertained to the profession like someone mentioned spanish for medical workers, maybe some legal classes for nurses and take the nursing courses and get more in depth. Like for instance I know wound care is covered throughout the program but make it a class and get down and dirty with it. There are so many wound types, medications and treatments that are not covered because of lack of time. I am not saying get rid of all the pre-classes .I believe that any psych , soc or science is completly appropriate. But all this other junk is a waste of time , but thats just my opinion.....

Or if you can take a class in CONVERSATIONAL spanish, you can ask the instructor......"como se dice 'when did you have your last BM' en espanol"Yes, for instance, here in Texas, I wish they offered Spanish for healthcare workers as part of the curriculum. I took Spanish I & II in HS but it really didn't help @ all. First of all, it was way too long ago, 2nd of all it's Castillian (sp???) Spanish - so not @ all the same that is spoken here and 3rd we didn't cover things like pregnancy, don't be afraid, do you hurt, don't move etc., you know?
And I'm in agreement with cad4296, I think @ least one economics class (instead of 2 hx. and 2 govt.) would be a lot more beneficial for us as a profession. How are we to promote and represent ourselves in the business world if we have no concept of things like supply & demand?
Jan 4, '06I just finished one of my pre-requisites for the ADN program at our local community college. I had to take SPEECH ! Even the instructor said that she didn't see why they required it for the nursing program, and that small group communication would have been more appropriate.
I hate speaking in front of people. Major fight or flight response, with rapid heartrate, rapid shallow breathing, shaking, etc.
The good news is that I got an A for effort. Since the program I am applying to is impacted (aren't they all?), I have to get As in all my pre-reqs to get into the program.
