I do. I decided to enroll LVN to RN program at Shepherd. I visited this morning to submit the completed admission packet and they said now only 13 seats available for LVN to RN program and so far no waiting list. I got 24 transfer credits and I feel like I am so lucky to get into LVN to RN there without waiting list.

What all did you need to apply? How long did it take and how much?

Hey, Shepherd University is on the list of approved rn program list. I enrolled the LVN to RN program last Friday and this school is nearby LA downtown. I heard only 13 seats available for lvn to rn, so far no waiting list.
I have been waiting for a community college for 2 years so it was so good to hear that there is no waiting list....
For me 24 transfer credits are accepted.... now I have one more year to go for a rn...

i have been in and out turning in everything i have to apply for the august class. the bad thing about shepherd is that they do not have their title 4 until next february and cannot provide any type of student loan until may. I already did all my pre req's needed for most colleges but they only accept up to 7 i believe. Therfore i have to take a couple at shepherd. My quoted price was a little over 44,000 and require you to pay in full to gaurantee ur seat in the program for the year. There is a bank they refer you to for a private loan but you will probably pay 8k - 10k more in interest in the end...

Just as a reality check do you really feel comfortable going to a university that the only other degrees it offers are in music and theology. Kinda of random. Also consider that other nursing school that was shut down this month for not being accredited and sending its students to clinicals in the Phillipines.

The economy is not great right now so I'm not seeing the value of having to pay $40k out of pocket with no loans or grants to get an RN degree if there are no jobs right now. Stick to trying to get into a regular school.

Everything up front? That is certainly not a good sign.

This school also looks a little shady but I can see how someone not aware that excelsior is not accepted in California might find it appealing. I found this posted on craigslist. LVN to RN in 1 Year for $15K

Basically its convincing you to pay $15k to do excelsior's lvn-rn program then get licensed in Nevada and endorse over to CA working at a federal facility while you wait.

at shepherd u can pay by semester but they do not gaurantee u a seat in the following semester if u do not pay in full. i found out there is about 1.5 month break in between each semester. keep in mind that their nursing program has been around for 11 years now and just been approved by the brn last month. I'm not trying to defend the program but there are not that many LVN to RN programs without waits in california any more.

@tothepointeLVN: i've heard of excelsior but never considered it because of the licensing issue in california. after reading the ad, it does soun appealing but is that legit? and with the job shortage in nursing in california, would that really be a good idea?

Private schools are not as difficult to get into as non private schools. Western Career College also has a LVN-ADN program which is only 8 months and is $37K and no waiting list, but they DO offer financial assistance. Like others have said, with this economy, I'd try to wait and try to get into another non private program before going this route. If money isn't a factor for you, then maybe one of these schools is a good option, but for me, I'm going to wait before forking over so much money. I did the private school route for my LVN with no loans (they weren't offered), and I dont want to go this route again.

No I would NOT suggest doing excelsior at all. I guess my point was made right in your post ( not your fault so not an insult). Desperate nurse to be's will read that ad and see what they want to see.

The real truth behind that ad is excelsior is NOT approved in California and suggest that you get a license in TX and then try to work for the VA in california is very risky. For one the ad doesn't mention you have to be a citizen to work at the VA. Also the hiring process at the VA is time consuming. And what if the VA doesn't want you at the end?

Even ISU which is legit in CA I would not endorse since I have yet to hear of anyone graduating and getting a job in CA.

When I was looking for RN schools in LA I found at least 25 within driving distance. If I hadn't gotten into my first choice I would have applied to them all. You luck gets better the more lottery tickets you have right?

    Guys,
For those of u living nearby Los Angeles, check out LA Harbor College. I have my lvn license, majority of my pre-reqs done and a 3.0 gpa. I got in- in 1 semester. All u need to do is take a few lvn-rn transition courses and tease test. PLease dont bother with these private schools until u check them out.
They place u in 2nd semester or u can challenge and if successful, ull be placed in 3rd semester. Awesome school with excellent Nclex pass rate,+95%.
email me if u have any further questions.
ps, not discouraging peeps to do the private school thing but y pay thousands when harbor is so economical? gltua
