CLEP exams, questions about practice tests and scores

Nursing Students LPN-RN

Published

I have been accepted into the LPN-RN hybrid program at MCC in Manchester this summer. I need to CLEP the Human Growth and Development class. My LPN school was not accredited, so I have been taking sciences again and this semester I have A&P2 and algebra. I had HGD in LPN school 6 years ago.

I took the CLEP practice exam and got 38 correct, 37 wrong out of 75 without out even looking at a book. The scoring is confusing, raw score then scaled score, 50 to pass? Anyone have any idea what this means?

I need to review the theorists, ages and basic topics. I have two exams this week and cumulative finals the week after plus work. I'd like to get the CLEP out of the way. Anyone know what my score predicts? Any suggestions besides studying up on Freud, Erickson and the others, concrete thinking and parallel play? Any suggestions would be great. Thanks

It looks to me like you will probably pass with a little study time. I would get my finals out of the way then when things are not so stressful study a couple of weeks to a month then test. I always take my clep exams during down time such as summer break or inbetween winter and spring semester. Good luck

Thanks Georgia. That was my initial plan, but the school wants me to complete it before starting. I don't think there are going to be many stress free days until sometime in June of 2014. I have a 2 full lab days in the middle of May before starting the program the day after Memorial day. I'm going to have to just stuff it into my study time. I think skimming chapters and focuing on chapter reviews, major theorists and life span changes will help me. If I do not pass the CLEP I will have to take the class along with an already heavy load for summer. I will do whatever I have to do. Thanks again for your response, it was helpful.

Did you end up taking the Human Growth and Development? I took it today and it is just a ton of theory! The score is minimum 50...that goes by questions correct. So your raw score is the number of correct answers. If you got 38 correct then your raw score is 38. At least that is how my study book explains it...I took the tests in the study guide...90 questions...same as the test. Then you add up all your correct answers and it gives you a raw score. I took several practice tests and studied everything I missed and it helped. It is a ton of situations like if a child does xyz...what stage of freuds theory would they be in? or what theory best describes this? Things like that. They throw a ton of names in and many that are not very prominent in the study guides. But if you study you can remember them.

[h=3]Computing Scores[/h]To reach the total score that students see on their score reports, we perform two calculations.

First, we calculate the "raw score." This is the number of questions answered correctly. The raw score increases by one point for each question answered correctly, and no points are gained or lost when a question is either unanswered or incorrectly answered.

Next, the raw score is converted into a "scaled score" by a statistical process called equating. Equating maintains the consistency of standards for test scores over time by adjusting for slight differences in difficulty between test forms. This ensures that the score does not depend on the specific test form or how well others did on the same form. The raw score is converted to a scaled score that ranges from 20 (lowest) to 80 (highest). The final scaled score is the score that appears on the score report.

Yes I took it in May and scored a 58 so I passed. Was a lot of theorist stuff.
