I am sorry you spent so much money getting your LVN, you must have gone to a private school? You can get your LVN at a JC for a fraction of what your debt is right now. Find a job as a LVN and get on a waiting list. Community Colleges are incredibly cheap in California. You can get your RN for under $4,000...

From a local JC in California.

Cost of the Program (approximately $3,615 total):

a. Enrollment fee ($20/unit) - $1,200

b. Required textbooks for the 4 semesters will cost approximately $1,000 - $1,500.

c. Students are required to have uniforms, white shoes and a watch with second display. See dress
code in student handbook for specifics. Approximate cost is $100-150.

d. Cost of fingerprinting/Background checks approximately $65.

e. Immunizations for students who do not have the required immunity to several communicable
diseases may cost over $220. Most are available through the Student Health Clinic for reduced
fees or at no cost to the student.

f. CPR certification costs about $50.

g. The school pin (optional) for graduation costs approximately $60-$130.

h. Licensure application costs about $300.

You must also consider the challenge of finding a well-paying, full-time job after graduation.

The experience of myself and my classmates is that that is not to be taken as a given.

PLEASE don't take on that loan burden. Follow the advice of previous posters & go with a traditional (non-commercial) school at a much lower tuition rate. There is no way you will be able to support yourself & pay $1k per month in loan payments. I also think $30k is an outrageous amount of money for an LVN program - was that another commercial school? Honestly, there needs to be more regulation out there to prevent them from taking advantage of people.

Defaulting on loans is not an option either. In my state & a lot of others - you can't even renew your nursing license if you are in default on your student loans. It is a no-win situation.

You can do the LPN to BSN at ISU online for around 25k (if you have ZERO prerequisites) I'd go with the advice you've been given and find a different route toward your RN. That's just way to much debt to have hanging over your head!

Even if you are in the rare state that doesn't care about you being in default (I don't know which ones those would be) If a facility accepts medicaid/medicare/VA etc etc they can't legally hire anyone who is in default and must let go of any employee who goes into default.

I worked full time and went to went to school full time. I did not qualify for pell grants so used student loans. I graduated from my RN with $23,000. of debt. thank you Community College. I take the same test as a BSN.... Don't get me wrong I am in process and am planning on completing a BSN program.

Then applied to a State Loan forgiveness program and they are paying $15,000 of that debt. so that will leave me with 8,000 that I will have to pay.

I'm starting Indian state.....way better deal...most people compalain that there is no classroom and your on your own....so yes you have to have some self discipline to study on your own....I personally have no self discipline but i want to be an RN really bad I feel like its what i was meant to do and love being an lvn.....so guess what Ive actually turned the TV off and have been studying....I would wait and get a job before taking on any huge amount of debt... i would say out of 40 students in my LVN class only about 14 have found jobs and we graduated in March its really hard out there even for new RNs.... ........ just my 2 cents

Are you saying that you will be 100k in debt, and only have an associates degree in the end?

I have a BSN and i'm only 45k in debt, and I also got $2000 in excess per semester from that money to live on.....

Why would it cost 70k for an ADN? What school is this?
