I am in my first semester of nursing school. I have been trying to leave a job and gave a two week notice, the place where I work is really short on staff, and this week two other people quit without notice. My two weeks have passed and the supervisor has asked me to extend my notice until they find someone, buuuuut that can take another month and finals are approaching. I know many people say just quit but this a healthcare related job and i know the impact it would have on the residents if i do now... any input?
They're asking you to not commit to an end date -- to stay "until" they find someone. And if TWO quit without notice, I have to wonder what kind of working environment it is...leaving w/o notice isn't something people typically do.
Staffing the unit to adequately care for the residents is THEIR job -- not yours. If they are concerned about the residents, they will hire agency staff to cover until they find permanent staff.
Adhere to your notice and they have no reason to badmouth you afterwards. If you need to adjust your notice, give them another FIRM date in writing, and stick to it.
