What is your schedule like?

Nursing Students LPN/LVN Students

I reallly want to apply to a LPN program but I am worried that it's not going to be possible with having younger children. I am 32 years old and I have a 4 year old and 6 year, the younger one will be in school full time next fall. I have a supportive husband but he leaves the house at 6am and is home at 5pm. He can rearrange his schedule a couple of days whole week. I have no family so would have to be put my kids in before school care. I've been a stay at home for 6 years so the thought to have to put them in before school care at 6:30am every morning is a little overwhelming for me.

I know every program is different but can some of you post what your weekly schedule is?

If anyone have a situation that is similar to mine and you are making it work, please please share with me your story. Nursing has been a dream of mine but I am so scared to pull the trigger.

I am about to start a CNA job so I guess that's a step in the right direction but not somewhere that I want to stay.

(Evening program is not an option for me)

I am a newly single mom. I started prereqs when my youngest was 4. At that time I had been an at home mom for about 10 years. I only took classes when my husband was off work or the kids were in school.

Fast forward 3 years, to last year. my husband left us. I decided to continue to pursue nursing. I was accepted to a full time year long LVN program which I started 2 months ago.

I cried at the thought of leaving my kids. At the thought of putting my kids in before and after school daycare, when I had prided myself in being a present and involved mom. I used to go to every single sports game. I took my kids to and from school everyday. I cherished those times.

Being in nursing school has been a transition, for me. My school does not give us a firm schedule, except that we may be in class M-F 9-5:30. We never can tell when we will get off at 2:30 or 3 or 4. It makes me angry because I want to go pick up my kids if I can, but I have to make arrangers for someone else to get them and take them to sports because I never know my schedule.

We will start clinicals 3 days per week in less than 2 weeks. On clinical days we may have to drive to a site up to 2 hrs away. We will have to do 8 1/2 hr days starting at either 6/7am or 2/3pm.

It helps that my former mom in law will take my kids to and from school everyday. They spend the night with her often. I am thankful for her availability, But it's hard in me emotionally. I don't worry about my kids, so much, tho. I pray for them to be ok in my absence.

I try to show my face at my kids school as often as I can. I drive my kids to school most days. It's hard to squeeze in quality time with my full time school schedule. I think if I were used to being a work out of home mom it wouldn't be so hard to go to nursing school full time.

I keep telling myself that moms do this all the time and my kids won't die because I'm not around as much.

Sorry for rambling. It was a long week at school and its Friday and I'm tired. /need a margarita, lol/

I have a blog about my life on nursing school you can visit if you wanna read about more mommy stuff in nursing school: http://www.anursingstudent.com/

You have a nice blog. :) gonna book mark it.

Since you are not working you have a great advantage ;). My children's childcare hours are 6:30am - 6:30pm. I go to class Mon-Fri 8:am- 2:30 pm but majority of the time, I am out between 1:30pm and 2pm and when I have clinicals, I go to class M/Th/Fri 8am-2:30pm and Clinicals T/W from 7am-1pm. It is hectic and I hate having to take my babies to school so early in the am BUT, this is a sacrafice that I am willing to make and it will be worth it at the end. Good luck with your decision, you are able to make it work and keep us updated :)

My program was Mon thru Thurs 830-230 with clinical days being 730-430. I have three kids 8,5,&2 and it was hectic! I had to quit my full time job and hubby took over all the bills. I only worked every weekend in home health so that work wouldnt interfere with my studies. It was very hard but now that i am finished it was all worth it. Nothing worth having comes easy?
