Starting "Boot Camp"- Question ???

Nursing Students LPN/LVN Students

Well, I have heard all of the 'horror' stories, LOL. You know~ how LPN school 'ends life as you know it'. How it is like a 'Boot Camp' and you can 'say good bye to your loved ones for a year'. Well I start Monday...so my question for you who have BTDT... Should my DH and I get away this weekend or will I still have time for him on the weekends or something? You guys have me scared. LOL

Hi,

Good suggestion, life as it is normal now completely changes, I am struggling going back b/c of all my free time now, I got sick during Pharmacology and had to drop the course, I dont start till May/June. I have been enjoying my family time as much as I can because I knowall my free time will be dedicated to school.

Just remember its not permanent and its only a year or so of sacrafice.

Good Luck.....

I think it is all what you make of it. I did LPN then RN and still had time for my family. Don't stress over it. The key for me was organization: I allotted "x" amt of time per day (it varied with workload) for studying. I also worked full-time and my husband was deployed part of the time. Its only impossible if you let it be.

Good luck.

I am in the middle of my 3rd week of school. My husband and I got away the weekend before I started school and I'm so glad that we did. I still have time for him and my children, but they're not quite the care-free moments I had a few weeks ago. Even though I still snuggle with my hubby on the couch at nights, I probably have flashcards in my hands or am babbling about the nine pulse points. I am spending time at t-ball practice with my A&P book in my hands. I'm not hassled or frazzled, I'm just learning to multi-task, but maybe the quality of the time with my loved ones is not quite what it used to be. I'm so glad they understand and are supportive of the goal I'm achieving.

Good time management skills and being ultra-organized are two skills that are going to help get me through school.

I have to make time for my personal life. Without it, I'd not be able to focus when I study, or handle the stresses. Not to say I don't put in a lot of study time, cause I do, but I schedule it like I would schedule a class. And, I schedule three weeks at a time, this way I don't get panicked all at once, where I'm stuck studying all the time. I guess, in a nutshell, time management, along with giving it my all when I do study, etc. Make use of class time, too, take good notes, and use it as study time (try to really get concepts during class).

LPN school is what you make of it. I work full time alongside classes, and i still have time to go see a movie with my boyfriend or go out to dinner with my parents. Granted I'm tired sometimes, but i expect that, working hard makes you tired. But it's definately not he** like they say it is though. Just kno your stuff and read what they tell you to and you'll be jus fine.

But I would take the weekend. Just so you can relax before you start. Sort of like a summer vacation. :-) Or spring break for that matter.

Its all about how you organize your time.

I am 7 wks from graduation and I can honestly say I didn't have to "say good bye to family and friends". I still spend time with them, do things with them. But there are times I have to bow out due to a lot of homework I have or a big test or something. Other than that I still see my friends and family, although not as much as I'd like or as much as I did before I started but in no way would I consider my friends and family gone.

Best of luck. go in with positive thoughts and make sure to get your organizational skills in check or you WILL never see anyone.

*Scrubs*, I just wanted to say thank you for starting this thread because I have been having the same fears! I start on Monday too and my husband and I have been trying to really make these last days special because I don't know when I'm going to be this "free" again! I've been trying to prepare my kids for the fact that I'm not going to be so readily available as well. My mind is just racing!

Best of luck to you! I'm sure we'll both make it out in one piece with our families remembering who we are! lol
