hello, i need some advice.

i am your average housewife..ive been married 20 years and i have 7 children. i have worked as a cna/chha off and on for about 14 years now. i stopped working when i had my last child..well, it turns out that my little boy is very disabled. right now we know he has atypical moebius syndrome, he is deaf, mentally retarded, and he has a feeding tube because he cant/wont eat solid food.we are still making our way through various genetic tests, but so far they have come up normal! its very difficult, needless to say. that aside, caring for him has inspired me to start working again, and i really REALLY would like to go to school to become an lpn. is it possible at my age? i am 37 right now, and have several obstacles to overcome before i could actually go, meaning i would be around 39/40 before i even got started! any advice/encouragement/whatever would be much appreciated!!

Yes it is possible my mom graduated nursing school in 2008 and I also have a 60 year old and a 50 year old woman in my class who are currently in nursing school so yes it is possible.

It's never ever too late! You can do it! I have a dear friend who is an RN BSN and she went back when she was 50. She had an adult son with cerebral palsy living at home and he needed around the clock care. With the support of her family and friends, she did it! Best of luck to you!

Specializes in Psych, geriatrics.

I just finished 14 months worth of nursing classes and passed. All I lack is my 3 weeks of practicum (120 hours at a site actually working with a preceptor). I am 49.5 years old. If I can make my brain work, my friend, you have no problems making yours. You have all that CNA experience, managed all those children and their lives. I would say, don't let anybody stop you. You are strong, capable, and that's what you need to make it.

The valedictorian of my class was 52.

I think you can do it! I am currently a nursing student at the age of 19 but there are people in my class around the age of 40 or maybe 50s we don't really talk about it. Here something to keep in mind....

Younger people have it easier because they are still in the groove of school and remember lots of things for HS. But then older people have it easier because they have so much more life experience they are more likely to know the vitamins, know rather to use heat or ice and also understand what patients are going though more so then younger student. For example when I do clinical on the l&d floor, I have no idea what they are going though personally only medically and what I read/heard about.

Good luck, anyone can do it if they truly want too! Maybe see if going part-time once you start the nursing program is a option.

What would you say to one of your children who said,' Mom I have the chance to live my dream, but it's gonna be hard and I'm no spring chicken.'

:) You know the answer to this.

Specializes in Emergency Nursing.

No. Absolutely not. You are far too old.

Btw, I am a 46 year old man who recently graduated and got his nursing license.

I just graduated @39 years old turning 40 with 3 kids.

Hi! Im 47 and start LVN in January 2013!! This is a second career for me. Im a retired peace officer. Ive always wanted to be a nurse, but of course life happened. I got married and had three kids. I have 2 grown and the youngest is 16 and a junior in high school. I finally feel like I can handle the Nursing load. I will be attending with my only daughter, she's 23. This is just the beginning of my nursing career. I plan to continue my education to get my BSN. Your never to old to learn. Older students bring a lot of life lessons with them to school. Stay focused and go for it!! Good luck! :)

I am hoping I get accepted in the LPN program at my local community college. I just made the decision about a month ago, I am in the process of getting prepared. I am forty two years old. I have a child and two grandchildren. I thought of it like this, I'm going to be forty three in March either way, so I might as well be forty three and on my way to doing what I always wanted to do. Good luck.

You are NEVER too old!! I will be 37 in December and going to start school in April 2013. When I went to information night at school I was the youngest at 36! The oldest was almost 60. If Nursing is something you really want to do GO FOR IT!! You can do it!
