LVN's at children hospitals (specifically NICU)? difference between LVN and RN?

  1. Hi I'm currently a pre-nursing major. I am planning to apply to the nursing programs this fall but if that doesn't happen, my parents want me to do LVN. I would like to know the differences between an LVN and an RN. also can LVN's work at NICU? or anywhere at a children's hospital? I love kids and I would really love to work with them. Also, do I have to apply to LVN program like RN? are there prereqs? Thanks!

I live in Kansas City and our children's hospital here (Children's Mercy) does not allow LPN's to work on the floors, only in the clinics (they are like dr's offices within the hospital campus, i.e. GI, Oncology, Ortho, Endocrine, etc.)

Most NICU's in my area don't hire LVN's. I've worked in several NICU's and I've met one NICU LVN. She has been there nearly thirty years and that facility no longer hires LVN's for NICU.

I do know a NICU RN who was first an LVN and got some great pediatric outpatient experience before completing a transition program and hiring on in NICU.
