hi, vintagestudent:

i'm new here~

i'm planing to attend the hacienda la puente vocational nursing program as well, i just took the entrance test they said they will give me a call to see if i get in or not. the class starts on june and they said they took about 100~200 students highest score in entance test to take the pre-lvn class and cut down to 50 to get in the lvn program.

so you passed all that to get in the lvn pregram? is it hard to get pass for pre-lvn class? cause i do not have any experience on any kind of nusring class, what do i need to do to give me the better chance to get in lvn program?

thank you.

  • take nursing-related science courses at a local comm. college beforehand and earn no less than a b.
  • work on your math, reading comprehension, and writing skills if you're weak.
  • take advantage of the on-site class offered for those interested in a medical career.
  • strongly consider enrolling in a cna course first, this helps you get feel for the nursing environment and can increase your confidence. confidence is important in nursing school. :)
  • get your name and reputation known amongst the nursing staff--take the 4-month cna course at the same campus. ;) if you do, show up on time and prepared. no slackers need apply. trust me, your reputation will be known.
  • understand prior to applying that this accelerated program is intense and imperfect. be ready to cry at times, be flexible and ready to make the most of the program.

also, understand that competition is fiercer these days. the administrators are looking for the brightest and most committed. and yes, integrity still matters. oh, and there is no hand-holding in this program. babies/whiners/complainers are frowned upon. :o

for me, it's been a wild ride, but the growth has been immense. now on to rn school. woohoo!

best wishes! :specs:

Hi all! I agree with VintageStudent, all her suggestions are STRONGLY recommended. I passed the Entrance exam & anticipating to get into the Pre-LVN classes by May; in the meantime, I'm trying to take science pre-req classes; unfortunately, due to the state budget cuts I'm struggling trying to get into a class. Also, for those that live around the Covina area, I recommend completing a CNA program at Azusa-Glendora Adult School- it was a 3-month program & it gave me my firsthand clinical experience. If you have no clinical experience I feel it's almost necessary to complete a CNA program. As nurses, we supervise CNA's & if you have no understanding of what a CNA does, then how can we be good quality nurses? In addition, The Red Cross offers it, too, but it's very expensive, something like $1,500 for one-month. Also, I recommend interning at a hospital. Currently, I'm in a Clinical Care Extender program that's tied with Queen of the Valley, Intercommunity & Foothill Presbyterian Hospital & although it's volunteer patient-care, it still boils down to clinical time at a hospital, along with the potential medical staff to network with. If you want more info, feel free to email me at [email protected]. Best of luck!

VintangeStudent, if you don't mind me asking, how are the teachers there at Hacienda-La Puente- LVN program? The only class I'm taking there is Medical Terminology.

Thanks & good luck to everyone!
