LPN Students- Where are you doing your clinicals?

Now that they are phasing LPN's out of the hospitals I'm curious to know where everyone is doing their clinicals. We are doing all our clinicals at a nursing home with the exception of Pediatrics, which we are doing at a day care and maternity, which we are doing at a doctor's office.

Is it common to do Peds at a day care? Please let me know your experience.

Thanks!

Hi, we did our first clinical at a hospital on the Med-Surg floor and then a Nursing home and now were about to go back to a hospital (different one).

The first hospital we went to the LPN's were doing admin stuff, answering phones and filing. I would rather patient care even if it's in a nursing home.:D

Thanks Miaya. Where do you do Peds?

On the 12th and 13th were going to a hospital here for Maternal and Peds, but I really think it's just maternal. Our next and last semester every Wednesday and Thursday we will be at another hospital until we graduate in December.

So you said you did a rotation at a daycare, what did they have you do?

First Quarter: Nursing Home- 1 patient

Second Quarter: Hospital- Med/Surg unit- 2 patients + followed a nurse on TCU

Third Quarter: Childrens hospital- 1 patient, Mother/Baby unit- 2 patients, and Rehab Center- 1 patient + NICU observation

Fourth Quarter: Hospital- Med/Surg unit-3 patients + ER observation and OR observation

Where I live, select hospitals will hire LPN's. It's usually on their hospice units or out patient clinic centers.. but I have seen a few LPN's on the Med/Surg unit as well. LPN's can also work at:

-Nursing homes

-Rehab (generally a unit in a Nursing Home)

-Clinics (Plastic surgeons offices, Pedatric offices)

-Hospice

-Home care

-Small Hospitals

-Agencies (You go where the Agency say's they need you, most likely going to be a nursing home)

-Kindred Hospitals (a long-term acute care hospital, located all over, are known to hire LPN's)

2. Dialysis centers

3. Urgent care facilities

4. Freestanding surgery centers

5. Private duty

6. Group homes

7. Adult day care

8. Jails/prisons

9. Psychiatric hospitals

10. University health centers

11. Trade schools (instructors in MA, CNA, and LPN programs)

Pulled that list from another post. LPN's aren't really being phased out. It goes back and forth and really depends what state your in :)

Miaya we haven't done Peds yet, but when we do we are "observing" at the day care and writing papers, which I think is total crap, but what can I do.

Linsay that sounds like a a great clinical rotation.

It sounds like you both will be well prepared when you graduate!

We do our first clinical (geri) & last clinicals (leadership) at a nursing home.

The rest of ours are at different hospitals & acute care facilities.

LOVED the med surg floor :)

We have been all over the place or our clinicals. The first couple of weeks we went back and forth with two nursing homes, a hospital, and an acute care facility. Now we have maternity which is only two days at a maternity ward at one of the hospitals. We're also doing three days of pedes at what we think is a day care, and we're doing mental health at the alzeimer/dementia unit of a nursing home and hospital. But for each o these rotations its only two or three days and that's it. I wish it were more but you have to work with what you have. In between we are still alternating between the nursing home, the acute care facility and we have aquired a couple new hospitals. Usually on the med-surg floor which is great experience and one day the med-surg floors census was low so we went to the telemetry unit which was really cool. Right now with it being summer, we're lucking out and getting some nice sites since most rn schools are on vacation but it is tough competition. All of our sites are all over the city and some are even outside of it, but in the end it should be good experience. Good luck to you.

Wow...sounds like everybody is gonna have at least hospital experience--that's good. Mlclove...let me know how your peds goes

I did most of my Peds rotation at an afterschool program for behaviorally challenged children. Thankfully, we did one day at a pediatric facilty-- that was an awesome learning experience. I know the Health Occupations Coordinator at my school has had a difficult time trying to find hospitals that will allow us to come in for rotations.

We did, however, go to a hospital for Maternity, and may of us had the opportunity to witness a live birth. For Psych, we also went to a hospital. We're starting Med-Surg now, and thus far we have nowhere to go for clinicals. My instructor mentioned that we may have to go out of state. :-/ Hopefully not!

It's not uncommon for classes to do Peds at Day Care. I have heard of it, but how much can you possibly learn there? I wasn't too thrilled about where I went for Peds. I honestly felt like i was doing Psych all over again. Hopefully your coordinator is able to find somewhere else for your class to go. But whatever is decided, make the best of it... and always get in there and learn. :) Good luck to you!

We are doing clinicals all in a hospital with the exception of geriatrics we did in a nursing home on the dementia unit. You cannot get the clinical experience and see everything in a nursing home it's just not possible. they are phasing LPN's out, but there are still SO many jobs available besides a nursing home.
