Can you become an LPN, without going to an accredited ADN program?:nuke:

Yep! There are some ADN programs that allow you to get an LPN half way through the program, but most ADN programs do not offer that option and most LPN programs are separate from ADN programs.

I am an LPN, because I opted to take the NCLEX PN. Halfway through nursing school. I will also hold my RN barring no catastrophies. I have a friend who wants to become and LPN. I did not realize that you did not have to be accepted into an accredited nursing college. It can be done without all of the Prerequisites?:nuke:

No, I didn't mean to suggest that the LPN programs aren't accredited. LPN programs have to be accredited just like RN programs (well, they do if you want to be eligible to take the NCLEX PN).

Here in Maryland, most of the community colleges have both ADN/RN programs and separate LPN programs. The LPN programs have their accreditation, their prerequisites, and their (usually quite competitive) application process just like the ADN programs. I've noticed that in some other States, the LPN programs are more typically at vocational schools rather than community colleges, but they still require accreditation for anyone who doesn't want their certificate to be worthless.

As an example, here's a link to the Nursing page at the website of the school I'm applying to:

You'll see that there are links to the separate RN program and Practical Nursing program... and there are also an LPN-to-RN and even a Paramedic-to-RN transition programs.

I attended a private LPN/LVN program that was not connected to any RN program.

So, yes, you can become an LPN without going to an accredited ADN program.

Thanks that clears it up. I was under the wrong impression. I know my friend will be excited to hear the news. She is an MA, but would like to become a nurse also. :nuke:
