I LOVE it. I LOVE LOVE it.

Nursing Students LPN/LVN Students

Published

Hi all,

Just wanted to post something to encourage those who are about to start their LPN program. OK.....That's a lie. I just wanted to gush about how much I love being a nursing student. My school is a "discovery learning" school which means we don't have teachers, and I am not too crazy about that. But, I love the material and I love studying it and learning it. I think if you have a genuine interest in it it helps. I must say though, I am terrified of clinicals. TERRIFIED. Hopefully, the more I learn, all the more confident I will be when the time comes.

Thank You! You have no idea how good it is to hear that!! I start in 3 WEEKS!!!!!! (man it's weird saying that...I've been waiting so long!) I am absolutely TERRIFIED! I was worried because I am a visual learner who LOVES to read...sounds like it will be a piece of cake right? WRONG!! I can only retain information that i'm interested in...everything else goes out the window, and if it's an especially boring subject (ie; chemistry, math, etc.), I may find myself reading the same paragraph again and again for HOURS on end, never knowing what it is I am reading.

I hope school is as enjoyable for me as it has been for you. My program is notorious for being BRUTAL!!

Good Luck!

What the H--- is discovery learning? I am curious, never heard of it. I am also curious to know how you learn nursing as a profession and career with no instructors....I can't get half the students to be involved with clinicals when a teacher is present (NO OFFENSE) let alone with no teacher observing. Fill me in please!

That is so exciting to hear! I start LPN school on October 1st, just found out I got accepted last Thursday. I have been trying for three years to get in, so when I got the call, I couldn't believe it. I can't wait to start!

Ill be happy to explain (the best that I can anyway.) The "bookwork" part of school is like none other. They give us our assignments for the month, which is our monthly contract, and we just do them with the resources we are given. Which is the books we got at the beginning of the program. We do not have any classes, lectures, workshops, etc., We do not have teachers, we have "advisors" who are assigned to us to give us our contracts, review our hours, etc., I think we are allowed to ask questions but only if we have exhausted every other arena for an answer (books, dvd's, internet). We do labs on our skills, after having read about them, watched tapes, etc to be checked off on. Sometimes the advisor will do a demo but I haven't been lucky enough yet to have a demo on the actual module I am on. I think the clinical part is just like any other school. As much as I love learning the material, I do kind of wish I had the chance to listen to someone speak about experiences, something that the book might not tell you, or get a personal opinion on something. At the beginning of the first month they gave us a paper explaining why self-discovery learning is a good idea and it said it is beneficial to nursing students because it promotes skills such as time management, critical thinking, and decision making.

interesting....where is this? I wish you all the luck in the world, nursing school is tough. It sounds like it would work if you are especially motivated! I just hope you are not shorting yourself in your education....books vs real life are 2 very different things!

Yes...Where is this? Can you provide a link? I am intrigued!!

I know what you mean, thankfully the RN school I am attending after this is nothing like this LPN program.

I don't know.... It seems like a normal class environment from what I read in the download section. It doesn't seem any different to me. Maybe I am missing something, though. I wish I could find a program around here that lets you complete modules or something for LPN school, and do clinicals through a precept or something. Wishful thinking, I guess.

i looked at the download and have never heard of a school like this.. how do the clinicals work? do you all meet at a hospital? i'm a RN and really suprised to see a program like this... wonder what their NCLEX pass rates are? i am intrigued just like every body else...

please keep us posted on how you are doing in your schooling , take care
