I got my first IV stick this morning. I was so nervous my hands were shaking and I was afraid I would mess it up but as soon as I held the needle to the skin I calmed down and everything went great. Whew that's a relief!!:yeah:

Congratulations!!! I haven't seen your posts lately and was wondering how everything was going.

Congratulations!

After nearly 3 years of working as an LVN, I've never been able to get an IV stick. All of my patients who receive IV therapy have PICC lines, so I usually end up just setting the flow rate and giving the medication.

Thanks everybody. Our school gave us the opportunity to go to our local Digestive Center and place an IV (of course with the patient's permission to have a student do it) before they went in for their EGD, colonoscopy, etc. I still fumble like the nervous nursing student I am, but as soon as my needle hit his skin I switched into nurse mode and wasn't nervous at all. All our BON requires for us to be IV certified is to have an attempt (in order for it to be successful we have to receive flashback) at an IV, concurrent with our didaction portion of IV theory. I walked out of that place with a grin visible from the moon and a confidence that can not be shaken. I'm not sure why this skill has been such a big deal to me (as compared to tube feeds, wound care, passing meds, etc).

More and more this term I get that feeling that I am a nurse and I'm going to be a good nurse. School has been so hard this term (we are taking 26 credit hours) but it has been so much fun too. I've been stalking the board occasionally but haven't had too much time to post.

BTW - I go to one of those ridiculously "over-priced" private schools and my opinion is: YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR! I love my school.
