How do I "WOW" them in my interview?

Nursing Students LPN/LVN Students

Hi Everyone,

I have an interview coming up to get into an LPN program. I'm really excited!! It's been a long time since I've been on an interview. So I guess my questions are how do I impress them? Do I need to bring a resume? I've read some of the older threads on the kind of questions that might be asked. Is there anything else I should prepapre for?

Whatever you guys can help me with, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you inadvance.

I didn't have to interview to get into my school but have had plenty of experience with the workforce and hiring new employees. First thing I would suggest is think about your possible answers before you get there. For example, what are your strengths, what are your weaknesses, where do you see yourself in 5 years. When stating your weaknesses (if they ask) try to turn it into a positive. For instance...."I tend to be assertive when it comes to something I want, I'm trying to learn to focus my energy on creative ways to obtain ........" Ok, so not a wonderful example but, in that sentence you have taken what is your weakness (assertiveness), you have recognized it, and you have a plan to correct the situation. Also, with that example, assertiveness is not always a bad thing. When you get to clinicals you need to be assertive to gain the experience. Hope that makes sense?

Secondly, I know this sounds petty, but have a good handshake...no wimpy little old lady handshakes, but don't crush them either LOL. Third, eye contact is so important. When you are introduced to the interviewer, REMEMBER THEIR NAME and use it often while conversing. This will show that you pay attention.

Lastly, come up with some questions before. If you are asking questions that means you are interested enough with the program to have done some research.

Hope this helps......Good luck...oh and try to come up with a reason you want to go into nursing aside from the standard "I want to help people". Think that line has been burnt out LOL

Pharmgirl,

I appreciate all your advice! I have to work on some questions to ask them.

Thank you for responding. :tku:

I didnt have to interview for my school either, but when I was looking at the private LPN schools, they were asking me questions about my family. What they really wanted to know was how I was going to handle if the kids got sick or had to leave school early. Also they wanted to know what condition my car was in to see if I would have a problem getting to clinicals. I would somehow work in answers of these questions before they are asked so it comes off as if you have thought about these things and have a plan for them already. It looks prepared. Also it might not hurt to talk about books you have read, medical terms, how to do well in nursing school, so it also looks like you have researched started preparing for school.

any way, just some thoughts, I am sure you will WOW them!

Thank you for responding. I appreciate your :twocents: . That is a good idea to let them know BEFORE the question is even asked that you have reliable transportation as well as what your plans were if your kids were to get sick while you are in class. I def plan to use that. I really want to be prepared for this interview!

Thank you again!

First of all best of blessings on your interview. I logged in today to ask the very same question. My school in Elmford NY also has an interview phase. I just recently learned that I passed the first phase which is the CNET. Now, I am waiting for the interview. I have been so excited and nervous that I even posted a blog at http://hardroadtobecomeanurse777.blogspot.com/ anyone can feel free to comment. I need all the advice that I can get. What school are you applying to if you don't mind me asking?

Thank you. And congrats on passing the Cnet. I know a few people who attended or will be attending the Boces in Elmsford. I am venturing North to the Boces in Yorktown.

On top of appearing professional and dressing conservatively (no dangling earrings, for example), you want to impress upon them that you are bound and determined to not only graduate from the program, but become a competent nurse. Don't forget to let them know you aren't afraid to get your hands dirty!

My navy blue suit is all ready to go (NO dangling earing in my jewerly box either) :)

Thank you for your advice!

I just got through my interview and found out that I was accepted today! Good luck and I am sure that you will be great! Just relax and let them know that you are genuinely interested in a career in nursing. Everything else will come naturally!
