My situation is that I'm graduating from a VN school in Orange County, CA but I plan to move to NY right after. Should I just apply for the CA license and take the test then use that license to get my NY license? Or should I just take both state tests?

You can do either one, take the test in cali and come up here and transfer your license or have your certificate or diploma of completion from your program and when you com up here apply to the new york board of nursing to get your license in ny either way would not hurrt you it just depends on the amount of time you might have to wait to take the test in cali since you said you want to come to ny right away. Good luck

when are you graduating? and are you really moving to new york right after school and won't work in california?

first, the nclex-pn is a national exam. you only need to take it once and it should be endorsable in any state.

if you do not really need the lpn license in california then just take nclex-pn for new york state especially the wait for the result in california takes weeks.

this nclex-pn for ny can be taken anywhere. you can choose to take it in california if you want to or you can take it in new york or you can even take it in hawaii while you are on vacation.

just get the application packet for new york state and send them all the necessary information.

once you get your initial license in new york, you can always endorse (tranfer) this license to california later on if you need to. you just need to pay the fees and california would give a license (you do not have to take the exam again).

your teachers/school should be able to help you out with this.

good luck,

Not sure that you are aware that it takes about a month after you test for CA to get your license as an LVN. You do not even find out that you have passed until you receive the letter in the mail as they do not have you pay for the license until you have passed it, which works in the favor for some and saves them money if they do not pass.

You will not be able to do a thing about endorsing to NY without first having a license number issued.

If you are definite about not wishing to work in CA at this time, would definitely go for initial licensure in NY, but would write the exam before moving; always best to get things done first like this before moving. Also easier to get a job that way.

Best of luck to you.
