does anyone know of a free lpn course in nyc/bronx?

carmzz920,

the prep course isn't that intense for what i can remember. its mostly a review to help with the tabe and the cnet. it's a refresher course with math, reading and vocabulary. it was a huge help for me. i had been out of school for over 15 yrs and i don't think that i would've passed the cnet without it! good luck!!!!:yeah:

i contacted nyc health and hospitals corporation about the "free lpn program" and they sent me a letter saying: you must take a preliminary tabe (reading and math) exam to determine your eligibilty to be enrolled in the lpn prep program. you must score at least 10.0 in reading and 9.5 in math. all succesful candidates will be notified if scores meet the criteria for enrollment immediately after the exam. the prep program will begin january 2009 and run thru may 2009.

i took the test dec 1st scored 12.9 reading and 11.3 math. made it into lpn prep!!

so at the test site after they told me i passed and made it into lpn prep, they gave me a paper with some what of an outline as to what the next steps would be. they also told me that they'd mail me the info as to where id be takin my lpn prep classes and when in january the clases actually start.

i've been tryin to find out more of this prep class but cant seem to find any info on this site. if you dont mind the additional questions: how many days a week was the prep class and what were the hours? also where did you take your prep classes? were the instructors helpful?

you would think that they would have given me this info already but no... still waiting on a letter they're supposed to mail me with that info. i'm very excited to start the prep, just getting a little anxious since they've yet to mail me that letter and classes supposedly start in january.

thanx in advance

Carmzz920,

From what I remeber, the class started maybe near the middle or the end of January. That is When we will be starting clinicals. I think the classes were only 2-3 nights a week. From 4-6PM. They lasted until May, that's when we took the CNET. I took my prep course at Goldwater Hospital, which is where I'm taking the LPN course. Like I said before. I don't believe that I would've passed the CNET without the prep. The TABE was the easy part! Feel free to ask me all the questions you want. Maybe I'll see you when you start the prep course if you take it there. We alternate between clinicals and class every other week.

To anyone in the BALC LPN program. Do you have to take the CNET and the TABE? Which one is harder.? Thanks.

I thought that the CNET was 10x harder than the TABE.

i thought that the cnet was 10x harder than the tabe.

ok so this is what the sheet they gave me after passing the prelimenary tabe to get into the lpn prep class says,

*you've been invited to participate in the cnet preparation program.

*candidates who attend the cnet prep program will be reassessed after completeing the prep and must achieve at least a 11.0 in reading and 10.5 math

*in order to successfully complete the prep candidates must maintain 90% attendance, candidates who complete the lpn prep will take the cnet exam in early may.

i have 2 questions because this is clear yet still a little vaugue 2 me

1. at what point during the prep do we take the tabe again? right b4 the cnet? i mean i kno we have to pass the tabe in order to be allowed to take the cnet but when do they administer that exam? a week b4? a month?

2. about the tabe- the one that i took to get into this prep i heard was an easier level of the exam..level d i believe and they said the next tabe would be level a (did u find it to be too much of a difference. i did exceptionally well on the 1st tabe)

still waiting on the flippin letter in the mail!!:banghead: i wanna go to gold water !!!! crossing my fingers:specs:

oh yeah do u know how they select what site where you'll do ur prep and actual lpn program? is it just random selection or do u get to choose?

Skinny, im in BALC and i thought the TABE A was harder than the CNET,

ALLI, How are your classes going? did you start clinicals already? How are your teachers?

I sent in the application for BALC. I've been checking the job listings such as Monster,Hotjobs, Career Builder and the ratio of jobs for RN to LPN is beyond compare. Are there any LPNs that are having a hard time finding work in NYC?

does anyone know of a free lpn course in nyc/bronx?

Aren't you glad you posted this questions? I know I am! It also goes to show you that we shouldn't jump to conclusions and assume the worst - because there are good things available to those who ask!

HOWEVER - I have even better news for you!!!

I clicked the link that was provided in one of the replies and went back a couple of steps and found there is A LOT MORE OFFERED in this program than just an LPN certificate!

Go to the full website at http://www.nyc.gov/html/ceo/html/home/home.shtml

In the search box type - lpn

You will pull up a window which has this link

http://www.nyc.gov/html/ceo/html/programs/nurse.shtml

GO THERE!

The NYC CEO is offering a LADDER program for LPN and then a BSN!

"The Nurse Career Ladder Program will provide scholarships for income eligible New York City residents to attend nurse training programs leading to employment at an HHC facility."

"The Nurse Career Ladder Program offers two training opportunities at select facilities:"

Located at Goldwater Hospital's beautiful campus on Roosevelt Island, this program will accommodate 40 students per year. Program runs from September through June."

sounds great..i currently work for hhc...

I thought the tabe was a million times harder than the net

I absolutely the the course! The instructors at Goldwater are the best!!!! I start my clinicals on Feb. 4th!!!! I'm excited and scared at the same time. Can't wait!

During the prep course I took the TABE a few times. I scored just as well if not better each time. Good luck.
