Clinical rotation

Hi All,

So, my clinical rotations are 2 days a week in long term care for 3 weeks and then we rotate to more of a rehab setting. This is my third week. Today as I was going to introduce myself to my resident, I panicked...full on panicked. My mind went completely blank. When I composed myself and found out a little more about the resident I asked for help of another student to assist with a bed bath. I have only seen this done in class once and we never were able to perform it / practice it ourselves. Shdid I do the right thing by asking for help? My instructor looked at me like I should have known what I was doing. I feel like I was just thrown into those basic CNA roles.

Always better to ask for help, especially if you are not feeling confident.

First times for anything is scary! It was good and smart of you to get another person.. Whether its a bed bath, med administration, injection, catheter etc if you haven't done it ask for help!

I had no medical experience whatsoever my first day of nursing school and I also felt like I was thrown into it and not given any direction. I would watch the skill videos, youtube videos, and practice in the lab. There are also lab books that explain procedures that you can go over. Also, ask another student for help. You will get the hang of it.

I just got nervous because we had already been at the facility for 3 weeks. Each week we get a new resident to care for and my prior residents could basically care for themselves with little assistance. So when I walked into this particular residents room and seen her special equipment and how she was immobile and what not, I just panicked. But from now on when I come into a situation like that I'm gonna take a minute to re direct myself. Hopefully it doesn't happen again. Although my instructor said its good to have a little anxiety because it will keep me from "cutting corners".
