hello everyone,

i am a single mother of one (a 5 year old). i am pass the halfway mark in the lpn/lvn program and i was told on several occassions by both instructors and students that i am taking nursing school a little too seriously and that i need to relax a bit. ever since i have been taking fundamentals of nursing i have been using my saunders and pearsons nclex review books to study extra and do practice exams. i just recently finished psychiatrict nursing and came out with a 96 average in the class which i was told that is the highest they have ever seen as a final grade by the director of the program and she has been there for 10 years (and by the about 5 people failed).my thing is i just want to know if i am really over doing it and causing myself extra stress :banghead: that is not needed? should i just study from the powerpoints that are provided by the instructors and textbooks that i have? will it make a difference when it comes time to take the nclex-pn that i did all this extra work or can i get by on just doing the minimum?

p.s my graduation date is suppose to be in jan 2010 (because we take summer vacation):onbch: should i wait until the last month or two before i have completed my program to start preparing for the boards?

all replies will be greatly appreciated

I want to say Wow! Keep up the good work. If I were in your boat, I would continue on with your studying regimine becuase the more you are exposed to and the more you learn, you have better chances of passing the NCLEX. However, do not overload yourself so you do not go through nursing school dumping syndrome. You can probably practice a variety of stress techniques or just exercise everday and eat a healthy diet or anything that you read about to reduce stress. [= You will become an LPN/LVN!

wow i wish i could be as commited as you. As long as you function and are not feeling overwhelmed i would say you are fine. Obviously your study habits are working for you i dont see any reason why you should stop. everyone is different.

best wishes to you

I do the same thing minus the 96 on exams ! I do study guides, nclex questions, powerpoints and textbook reading. As long as you still have a life than I think you'll be fine.

I do all this studying but I still find time to go out with girlfriends ( like tonight), go to church, and hang out with my fiancee and family.

So some may think I'm taking nursing school so lightly but I don't, I just think there should be a balance.

I can't believe you have instructors telling you not to take school too seriously. It sounds to me like you have the gift and you should keep up the good work.

I haven't started nursing school yet but imo you can't start preparing for the nclex too early. If you prepare as you go you won't have much stress at the end and you stand a very good chance of passing on the first attemp.

I am very much the same way...I haven't heard any comments from teachers (really, that's pretty disappointing that they would say that!) but I sure do hear it from my classmates who think I'm just trying to make them look bad, or from my family and friends who think I'm nuerotic. The thing is, I'm enjoying every minute of nursing school because it's what I've always wanted to do, and I absolutely love it.

The way I see it, even if I don't NEED to know something for the test, odds are I'm going to need to know it down the line, and even in the off chance that I never use it, it will help me understand other things that I WILL need to know. I'm not just going to school to pass the NCLEX, I'm going to school to be a nurse and once I'm out there in the field I'm going to be judged for my competency, and there will never be such a thing as "knowing too much" or "taking it too seriously"

So just keep that in perspective...if you are doing really well because you are a perfectionist who is obsessed with a number on the top of your test, you might need to take a step back and re-evaluate...but if you are simply dedicated to learning and love what you are going to school for, it just means you are going to be one hell of a nurse ;)

etana85, you keep doing what is best and what works for you. none of them can take the boards for you, so what they say including the instructors, is irrelevent. you are doing this to make a better life for you and your daughter not to please your classmates or teachers. i wish more students could have the drive to succeed in nursing like you do.

Good Luck, Keep your head up :yeah:

I need to know how entire study regimen LOL! I make good grades (for right now, just started) but I would like to know how you practice your skills and are you already in the medical field?

You are doing a good job. Everyone is different and since this works for you keep doing it. I handle my studies the same way because what we do as nurses effects lives. There is nothing wrong with being committed.

Our program encourages us to do at least 3 NCLEX-PN questions a night. They want to continue the 100% pass rate they have now. Its your education, Nursing is a serious business and well a lot of nursing students are over acheivers. Its OK to be one too! Besides your grades always look good to potential programs for continuing your education on who they except some new grad programs even require a GPA above a 3.0

I say keep up the good work and as most have said, do what works for you! A's feel pretty dang nice!

I'm always glad to see students who take school seriously, so long as their relationships with their children are not negatively affected. If you are meeting your daughter's needs, then who cares what anyone else says?

Keep up the good work!

I understand the rationale behind instructors saying "relax, you don't need an A...blah blah blah!", but I am like you. I want to make sure I am NCLEX ready...not trying to cram at the last minute and "get" critical thinking. In addition, getting As is a personal goal. I compete against myself to challenge and better myself.

Obviously you have found what works for YOU so keep doing what you're doing! I wish you the best!
