Your 1st Day As An Lpn

  1. How long did it take you to pass meds and do paper work on your first day?

Did you feel that it was too much and you were completely exhausted when you got home?

On my first day as an LVN I was working in a small, hole-in-the-wall nursing home and had 30 elderly patients to take care of. It took me about 4 hours to accomplish each medication pass. I didn't do any paperwork on the first day, although I wished I had been oriented to the paperwork on my first day.

My first med pass alone was terrible, it took me forever and so did the paperwork. It was hard at first but, it gets easier. I stayed at work for about 2 hours extra for the first week to finish up paperwork because the med passes took so long. Don't worry though, after a month or so you'll be able to sling those pills out in no time at all and you'll know the patients so med passes and charting will be easier. Good Luck.

I was trained by an older RN. She was ready to retire and walked with a limp. But, try as I may, she could run circles around me. I couldn't keep up. It was a real eye opener.

Now many years later, still and LPN, I see new nurses who feel the same way about me. But, they will catch up, the same way I did. This uncomfortable phase lasts for a while, then it goes away, and you will feel more comfortable. Study each new thing in detail, or at lease one new thing each day. That way it sinks in faster. I tried to learn one new lab result each day and what the hospital's protcal was. it helped.
