when to call back?

I've been looking for a new job for awhile due to hours being cut and no possibility of a raise. I've had several interviews with no call-backs until this last one. I don't want to get my hopes up too much, but I think it went well. The pay is about 20% more starting out and the benefits are better. It looks like a nice place too, but it is twice the drive for me. They did say there would be two interviews and I got a message they wanted to talk to me again yesterday. The problem is I'm a little confused on the message. She said they wanted me to come back and talk with them next week, but said she would be out of the office until Monday and to leave a message so we could set up a time. When I first listened to it I thought she meant to call Monday morning, but since she said to leave a message I wonder if she meant I should call back right away (like today) or not? What do you guys think?

In my experience never call on a monday most facilityies do payroll staffing weekend report ect on mondays, but they will usually tell you not to call on monday, if she didnt say call Id say call on monday whats the worst she can say call tommorow.

I called her back and went in to talk to her two days later. I thought it went ok and almost thought I had the job, but she said she had to forward my info to the front office and they would make the decisions after the holidays. Well, I got the dreaded rejection letter just one day after the second interview! I don't know what the deal is? I'm racking my brain to figure out what I did wrong. The only questionable thing I can think of saying is maybe when she said they sometimes have to send someone home since they pad the schedule occasionally and I said that I have a 50 mile drive so I hope it doesn't happen that often. I don't know, maybe its just me and the way I relate at an interview? Maybe I'm being too honest with their questions as like when they asked what is one of your weaknesses and I said that possibly I haven't been a real people person in the past, but have been working on and improved on it.

In the past I thought maybe it was the references I've been putting down, but they didn't even ask for any. The other possibility I can think of is maybe its the previous employers. At one job I worked at I put down I was let go due to budget cuts, which is part of the reason, but part of it was due to performance in a very stressful environment which may have not been right for me (working in a jail). I've also heard rumors that some employers may put down unfavorable reviews if they don't want you to leave. That doesn't really make sense, but someone apparently someone checked on it and it may be the case some places. Anyway, at this point I'm about ready to give up. I'm actually thinking of looking into truck driving, but don't want to do OTR. If I could find a regional gig without experience, I would most likely go for that right away.

Its a shame that I borrowed all that money to go to school and will be paying for the next 17+ years and can't afford to pay it back every month due to not working enough hours. I was just getting by, but got some hours cut due to some new rules. I've been looking for a 2nd job for a couple months, but Its very difficult to find work that works around my rotating schedule. I've even been trying retail and fast food and most of them are not giving me a chance. Any ideas what to try? I'm thinking maybe take off that job on my resume that may be giving me bad reviews since I was working two places at the time and it won't look like a gap, but I don't know if that is advisable or even truthful or not? But I have to do something.

Update guys: I'm still applying when I see something interesting, but no calls yet. I did notice that the place that I originally applied at about a month ago has another ad in the paper. Its a big place with different departments and it looks like they have an opening in the assisted living center this time instead of the short-term nursing center. Do you guys think its worth a shot to send another resume? Or maybe try to call someone there and maybe ask if something was wrong with my application or is that out of line? My sis thinks it was because of the distance I lived from the place, but I would like to know if it was that, my previous employers, references, credit check, or just me.
