When applying for jobs......

by Shantae

Do I go to the facility? Do I apply online? And how would I go about asking them if they're hiring LVN's??

I have found that I get more positive results when I go to apply for jobs in person. One time I was asking for an application at the receptionist desk and while conversing with the person, he excused himself, left the area, then came back. A lady came from upstairs down to the office. I later found out that she was the DON. I was given an appointment for an interview. I got the impression that the DON expressly came by the office to look at the applicant. I might be wrong, but that was the impression I got at the time. I mail my resume to places that are too far to drive to easily. I have never applied online because I don't want my personal info out there. So far I have been able to get jobs by using my methods. I have also read that people who put their resumes in resume banks like monster.com, get inundated with offers. So I would suggest using as many methods as you are comfortable with until you find what you want. Good luck.

I faxed my resume to 3 facilities which had positions advertised in the local paper. Three replies, three interviews, three job offers. Don't forget word of mouth. Ask your nurse friends if there are any openings in their facilities.
Good luck!

I never had good results with emailing resumes. Faxing works much better. With my current job I attended an open house, my last job I dressed nicely and asked to fill out an application and was interviewed on the spot! I think pounding the pavements works well. You can also get a peek at the place in action. Hope this helps. Good luck!

I only apply at places that advertise they're hiring LVNs. I usually know that they hire LVNs, because I spot their employment advertisement in the Sunday newspaper, and they specifically request LVNs in these ads. I suppose I'm old-fashioned, but I look at the newspaper employment ads to find facilities that hire LVNs. I simply do not walk into places blindly, not knowing whether they're LVN-friendly.

In my job searches I have been successful finding open LPN/LVN positions by searching the newspaper employment ads, online job banks, and hospital websites job centers.

For smaller places like nursing homes I always go fill out the application and hand in my resume in person. 9 times out of 10 you will get an informal interview on the spot and get a job offer right away. Many times I have called the contact number ahead of time to ask when a is good time for me to stop by.

Large hospitals have big HR departments and work differently. Usually they are a lot more selective when it comes to applicants. For my current job, I applied through the hospital website and application to hire process took almost 2 months! I'm glad I was patient though.
