"Umm...I need the RN."

by TheCommuter Staff

I am an LVN charge nurse who works at an upscale nursing home; in addition, all of my coworkers are LVNs. Even the three ADONs (assistant directors of nursing) are all LVN nurse managers. You get the idea: this place is basically run by LVNs.

A couple of days ago a family member told my coworker, "I need the RN to schedule a mammography appointment for mother."

I thought this request was intensely silly because even a lay person with a low intelligence level could schedule an appointment to receive a mammogram. This is the first time I have encountered a family member who apparently did not even trust the LVN to make an appointment. Thanks for reading my little vent.

Thumbs up Re: "Umm...I need the RN."
Hey, Most people do not understand the difference in nurses/cna's/housekeeping/ect. I would just blow it off as an overprotective family member and laugh. I guess the way you are handling it It is nice to have this forum to come to and vent!!!

I told a pt that I was his LPN for the night and I would be giving him his meds and so on. He says "Oh so the P stands for pill pusher!?" I said yup and the N for nurse. We both got a kick out of it. Most don't know there is a difference and some don't care one way or another. They just know you work there. Heck some ppl I run into call all nurses RN and don't even know what RN stands for. LoL

Well WE know that LPN stands for "Low Paid Nurse" and RN stands for "Rich Nurse".......right? I never told my pt's I was their LPN...I just said I was their nurse.

Hello,
My name is Angel and I am your nurse today.

That's it. In 10 years I think I've only been asked whether I was a RN or LPN twice. When I worked LTC most residents families knew that LPN's were in charge and That there might e 1 RN in the building during the day. In corrections, lets just say that that clientele(sp) didn't care unless they wanted to be a smart asterick and ask. In rehab it's been the same respect. Working rehab in the private sector we were identified as Staff nurse (RN and LPN), in the governemnet we are specifically identified by title.

I should also add that this particular family member has three daughters who are all RNs. Therefore, I can conjecture that she's probably educated in the differences between LVNs/LPNs and RNs.

Sorry, but perhaps I should have mentioned this tidbit in my original post of this thread.

Then she should know that even the ward clerk can make an appointment. It's still an idiotic statement.

I guess these type of peope get on my nerve.

Either that or she dont even know that there are such things as LVN's. If that is the case you could have really freaked her out and said...Oh..humm. no RN's here...but I would be glad to help you... lol
